407 hdi 2.0 cambelt failure

Hi just after a bit of advice from anyone that is familiar with these engines.
The other halfs step dads has snapped the belt, is it worth trying to salvage this engine or when it goes is it usually catastrophic on these?
Apparently he just lost all power and the breakdown company has diagnosed the belt, I've had a quick look on eBay and a replacement engine looks like it could be had for around £4/500.
is there any specific engine code he would need, its a 55 plate btw.
Ive got a cheap decent mechanic that could do this but we will have to trailer the car to him so he can't diagnose it really, he's talking about selling it but it will be peanuts with a snapped belt, just looking for an economical way of getting it going again if possible as otherwise its in really good nick.
