Decided to get new number plates as the ones on the car were getting a bit tatty. Went for a square plate on the front and, although I am still deciding, I think I quite like it. Seems to suit the front of the car better than a conventional plate somehow, perhaps because it is closer in shape to a US or Aussie plate.

My only concern is whether plate will be ok under wind pressure at fast motorway speeds, as although the number plate tape it is held on with is strong stuff, the bottom two thirds of the plate is unsupported. I haven't done a high speed test yet, but am keeping the old plate and some number plate tape in the boot just in case!

I know many folk buy 5 digit private plates which fit in the recess on a single line, but I quite like my cars to keep their original registrations.

Thoughts?

Well those are two images I didn't have in my mind, but do now! I shouldn't have asked!

By way of an update, and in case anyone is thinking of going the square front plate route, I decided that number plate tape just wasn't going to secure the plate properly, owing to the limited surface area to stick it to. The solution? Well, you can drill the plate and screw it into either of the two sets of holes pre-drilled in the number plate recess, but I didn't like where the screw caps would sit on my plate (half on a number, half off) and prefer a cleaner look. Then I came across these number plate brackets in a well-known car accessory retailer. They have adhesive pads on the surface, and provide better support for the plate. Screw them in, rip off the tape covering the sticky pads, stick on the plate. Job done.

I guess there will be slightly reduced flow to the radiator (but not the air intake) but I don't think cooling will be an issue in our climate. I like it, and it is easily changed by a subsequent owner if they don't. To each their own I suppose.
