In process of setting up a visit for the club to Vulcan XM655 on display at Wellesbourne Mountford Airport in Warwickshire.

Have provisionally set a date of Saturday 2nd May 2015 with the organisers.

The visit will be £10.00 per person and will include the following:-

- Systems Demonstration - Subject to serviceability on the day
- Navigation lights, Anti Collision and landing lights, bomb bay doors cycle, the operation of air brakes and control surfaces (elevons and rudder).
- A tour of XM655 including a visit to the cockpit – in groups of 4 with one of our volunteers.
- Parts of XM655 open for viewing. E.G. Bomb bay doors, ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) bay, an engine bay door.
- A DVD of XM655 to watch

Tea, coffee and merchandise are also available paid for individually.

There is a possibility of a photo shoot with the cars laid out in front of XM655, however as Wellesbourne is an active airfield it cannot be guaranteed. We will not know until the day of the visit as it depends on which way the runway is being used and the way the wind is blowing on the day.

Here is the website for more info http://www.xm655.com/

I am not sure whether there are any limitations on numbers I will need to confirm this. But suggest we start a list of interested members. So add your names here...

Hi Everyone

Been in touch with those lovely Vulcan people and unfortunately our provisional booking for 5th May has been mislaid because of a change of administrator in 2014/15.

However, they are still very keen for us to visit and have given us a number of date options as follows (all Saturdays) so my suggestion is we pick the one that the majority can make

18th July
22nd August
29th August (bank hol weekend)
12th September
19th September

Let me know ASAP so I can get the booking in.

Cheers

David

Thanks to everyone for putting their names down for this event. We are limited to 24 people I think we have space for one more person so before I close the list - first come first served for one last person.

I will then close the list and confirm costs (around £10 a head) and arrangements.

Looking at the info on the Wheels and Wings Day web page it also says the Vulcan will be leaving the airfield to display at the Weston Airshow, the scheduled time for the Vulcan to display at Weston is 17.10, so if you are at Wheels and Wings you should also see a take off as well as Taxi Runs biggrin

Don't blame me if the scheduling goes tit's up though punch

Unlikely XH558 will be landing at Wellesbourne and then taking off as once it's in it cannot get out. The runways not long enough but would love to be proved wrong. Suspect the take off relates to when she leaves Doncaster.....

Just goes to prove that I need to learn more about these aircraft read, I should have realised XM655 would be doing Taxi runs, and if I am now reading correctly, XH558 will do either a fly past or display, please correct me if I wrong, as I already have been.

Not at all it's great you are interested and even better you like Vulcans and own a great make of car.

The history of XM665 is very interesting too. It was the last Vulcan bar two to be built, and is the youngest surviving example. XM655 initially flew with No.9 Squadron of the RAF, and was also operated by Nos. 44, 50 and 101 Squadrons. In 1984, XM655 was sold off to Roy Jacobsen who intended to keep her airworthy, but the costs proved prohibitive and also the runway was too short for it to take off, and XM655 was left to deteriorate. Title of XM655 then passed onto John Littler, owner of Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield, who intended to get her to a taxiable condition, but not airworthy.

Jacobsen also originally bought XL426 the other Vulcan that does fast taxi runs based at Southend. Unfortunately his plans to fly this ex RAF display aircraft failed as well.

Hi Everyone

Visit getting closer so here are some details.....

The visit is confirmed for Saturday 12th September, starts at 10:30 and lasts around 2.5 hours possibly a bit more if the weather/ aircraft movements allow us to take the cars round the front of the Vulcan for a photo shoot.

The cost is £10 a head payable on the day. I need to collect this at the start of the event so bring your notes with you. I think there is a souvenir stall that should be manned on the day by volunteers. All your money goes to the upkeep of the Vulcan, so money well spent.

The visit includes a guided tour of the whole aircraft including cockpit visits. They normally power up the APU and show you how the control surfaces work as well. You get to touch one of only two Vulcans that are still in taxiable condition.

Car parking is provided at the South Warwickshire Flying School postcode CV35 9EU where we will gather before we are collected for the visit. Wellesbourne Mountford airfield is easy to find 10 mins from M40 junction 15 down the A429. You can't miss the Vulcan she's the biggest airplane on the airfield.

Check out the airfield using this link http://wellesbourneairfield.com
