HOLDEN is poised to kill the Commodore name once local production comes to an end in 2017 — and the man in charge of the decision is the same person who vowed to save it: former Holden boss Mike Devereux.
The decision comes as the next generation large car to replace the Commodore is now expected to come from Europe not China.

Opel engineers are out testing some new hardware in the shell of a current-generation Insignia Sports Tourer, and according to our source that hardware is the mechanicals for the next-gen Insignia, due out in 2016.
The Insignia is a crucial model for General Motors as it’s not only sold in Europe but also in the U.S. and China, where it's badged as a Buick Regal. While it’s not certain if the same will happen for the next generation of the respective cars, there’s a good chance it will given General Motors Company’s [GM:NYSE] attempts to further consolidate its Opel and Buick brands.
The car featured here is believed to be a test mule for the next-gen Insignia. The bump on the hood suggests that some new powertrains may be in the works.
The new Insignia is expected to ride on a heavily updated version of the current model’s front-wheel-drive Epsilon II platform and should feature styling influenced by Opel’s forward-looking Monza concept unveiled in 2013.
Considering the current Epsilon II platform is already found in a diverse range of GM models such as the Chevrolet Malibu and Impala, as well as the Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS, it’s likely their replacements will also use the updated version of the platform being developed here. Holden’s next-generation Commodore due in 2017 should also feature this platform.

The Malibu would make a really good replacement for the Commodore - the Insignia is good in VXR form and makes a good 2nd hand purchase but is just does not have the presence of the Commodore.
IMHO Holden should look to the US - Camaro, Challenger, Malibu, Impala all good shaped sedans that could be made Australian after all Ford is now doing a RHD Mustang.

But GM is not run by petrolheads who know what enthusiasts want, they are run by academics who will give you stuff THEY think you ought to have (and that can be made for the lowest possible price).IMHO Holden should look to the US - Camaro, Challenger, Malibu, Impala all good shaped sedans that could be made Australian after all Ford is now doing a RHD Mustang.
These are the very people who desecrated the Chevrolet brand after all, and are about to ditch the Holden brand in Oz !!! Frankly, a chimp at Atherstone Zoo could do a better job of marketing. (Sorry if I have offended any of our simian cousins).
(We just need to be thankful that we have some enlightened folk at GMVXR in Britain)

Commodores have loads of space. No doubt the insignia is also st that dept.

That's why I think Ford have got it right. Take the most popular models from the biggest regions (Focus, Mustang, Transit) and globalise them. I think it's great that I can get hold of a V8 Mustang in RHD from my local dealer. Imagine if GM did the same with the Corvette, Camaro and CTSV Caddie?

A lot of that IMO is to do with the government committing to take money out of the economy by taxing more than they spend, they have already started this process. With the economy slowing down the government is only going to accelerate the process. Self inflicted.wormus said:
