Thanks for advice by Chris today at Ace cafe regarding winter tyres.

I've a couple of (maybe simple) questions that you guys may be able to answer.

I'm looking to get some wheels and winter tyres to carry in my VXR8.

So, I'd like to know whether 18" BMW wheels would fit on the rear of my VXR8 - is the PCD the same? Will they fit over the brakes disc?

I've seen a pair of wheels with 235/50/18 tyres and also some winter tyres size 255/55R18, will these fit on the wheels? What is the effect of the tyre's extra width? How do I work out the change in diameter that will effect speed readings?

Thanks for the help,

Steve

BMW have the correct PCD (5 x 120). Standard VXR8 wheels are 9.5 x 19 I think, so you'll be looking for 9.5 x 18 or similar.

Next the offset. Standard offset on a 9.5" wide wheel is 57mm (or et57). You can get away with going down to ET40, but lower than that and you may start touching your tyres on the wheel arches.

The last critical measurement is the hub flange. VXR8 is 67mm, so you'll have to get some spigot rings made, to convert from whatever wheels you get, to the VXR8 hub

Make sure you know the offset from adverts, before you buy on ebay. Wheels from E36/E46 3 series, X3 and X5 should fit, but most others won't.

eta: 18" wheels will not go over your front brakes.

Thank you Araf for your clear input;

So, BMW X3 18 INCH SPORT ALLOYS with Pirelli scorpion 235/50/18 str tyres should fit and get me out of snowy trouble if fitted to the rears?

Thanks again,

Steve

I was just thinking that it would take a bit of working out, then realised that our Ute is on 18s (and BMW wheels for that matter), and the fitment is perfect for VEs. redface

We are on 245/45-18s. This will give you more choice of tyre - and cheaper ones too (BF Goodrich M&S at £117.35 each + del from Camskill).

Also, if you are using narrower than standard wheels, the offset becomes less of an issue. If you post up the wheel specs, I'll work out where your wheel will sit, in relation to standard.

If you're in the south, then Sarge 4x4 is worth giving a call for tyres and fitting http://www.reigate-tyres.co.uk/
Thanks for your reply Araf,

The only spec I have is that I posted earlier: "BMW X3 18 INCH SPORT ALLOYS with Pirelli scorpion 235/50/18 str tyres", from what I am hearing these wil fit OK.

So, I you are kind enough to confirm, I'll bid tomorrow.

[Sorry for the delay in replying to this - early start, 10 min lunch and late working today}

Cheers, Steve

Just found some more of those wheels on ebay, and they are 18 x 8" ET46, so the offset will be fine.
The seller said: "the wheels are genuine bmw x3 sport bbs is46 18 alloys "

I did a search and the infor I found was: "X3 E83 = PCD 5x120, centre bore 72.5mm and M14x1.5 bolt thread. ET 40-46"

I'll make my bid in a few minutes (assuming they are still avaialble). Thanks for your help Araf :-)

If it's the ones I'm watching (£60 each + £15 postage), that's a BIN price, so no need to bid, just hit the buy button, and tell him you want both. smile
Ordered and paid for. Thanks again for the advice.

I expect it will snow heavily until they arrive, then not snow for years, ha ha.

As for spigot rings, there are many on eBay for less than a fiver - I presume these will be fine too?

Cheers,

Steve
