Breaking HSV VT2 GTS #16
Discussion
I'm trying to formulate a plan for breaking my GTS. Here's what I came up with. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This isn't a for sale thread. I want to best figure out how to let the poor thing go. If you're really keen on something please PM me.
Step one is to transfer the low miles LS1 and ancillaries into a blue CV8 Monaro (with a full VXR body-kit) I have. This, along with the prop (yes it has a 2004 style prop / diff) will almost complete the Monaro and give me a working V8 (hurrah).
It'd be nice to see #16 restored. I'm not sure I'd try selling the rest complete though, as it's probably worth £3K+ as parts and I don't see anyone paying that for it.
The gearbox, rip-shifter, ecu and loom will join an LS1 that is dismantled as the basis for another project.
The stainless exhaust is a tad too long for a Monaro. Anyone know if shortening it will make it work on my Monaro? I have another stainless system (bit noisy though) if it can't.
The HSV tube headers are in good condition, but the cats/pipes are pretty much done. I have some new stainless block hugger headers and cat pipes, so might just use them and sell the tube headers. I have a set of long tubes if I really want to milk the motor for more power.
The AP racing brakes have all new disks, pads and flex pipes. Despite having a spare set, I'll probably keep them for another project, as I can't see eBay finding a buyer who'll pay the reserve I'd set.
Four of the five wheels have just been refurbished. I have way too many sets of wheels, so they'll have to go.
This leaves the rest of the shell with body-kit and interior. It would be nice to see it go to someone who has the time to rebuild the chassis rails and sills themselves (it's not commercially viable to do this, I know). I might try selling it on eBay complete to start with. Guessing all that's of value if I break it is the body kit and the seats. Maybe a Holden owner might want the dash with HSV dials. Can't see bare shell being worth more than it weighs in at.
The number plate is interesting (A16 HSV). It works very well with this car, being #16 and all. I'm not sure how people get these valued. Ideas?
The radiator is almost new, as is the power steering cooler, while air-con radiator/condenser is still in it's box. I understand these don't fit all Monaros. Anyone know what else they might fit?
The rear shocks are new and the fronts look a little special. Sadly, it's hard to remove these and leave it in a state to move, so they may have to go with the shell.
Any other ideas as to what might be worth trying to sell off it?

Bear in mind that - if you want to sell the reggie - the car needs to have a valid MOT. This was certainly the case a few years back.
The V317 only states that "The vehicle must be a testable type, subject to MOT/GVT (road worthiness test)". There's no mention of actually having an MOT (unless that requirement means you do). You can even request a transfer now if the vehicle has been written off.Anyone know for sure?
BTW I tried to do it online just now and it said I'd have to call them...

Surely its worth getting a few more quotes on the welding. Got any piccs of how bad it is ?
I mean if the cars value is £4-5k , a grands worth of work isnt gonna kill it.
Both chassis rails front to back are knackered, as is the full length of one of the sills. The other sill needs lots of patching. One rear wheel arch has a 7"x7" area of rot. Both front strut tops are rotten. There are a few other areas underside that need patching too.I mean if the cars value is £4-5k , a grands worth of work isnt gonna kill it.
There are a couple of panels that are showing signs of rot coming through and the paintwork is well past it.
I can't see a decent body shop quoting less than £2-3K for the welding (I've tried). After that, you'd want to underseal it (£600). And after such an investment, I'd want to paint it (£££££). You could easily spend over £6K trying to make it perfect.
Last GTS I saw was up for £5500 (carandclassic) and on eBay prior to that for £6500. The engine, gearbox, ancillaries, ecu and loom as a package is worth £5K on eBay every day of the week. You'd only rebuild #16 for the love of it. I have two Monaro projects that are in much better shape.
I've had my fun, so it's time I moved on. Shame, but there you have it.
Mine looks just like that - only not finished
Actually, I don't have the SS style wing vents. I do have the rare roof spoiler though. Mine will wear 2905 VXR alloys.
Was thinking of fitting my 6.8 V8 into it. Would come a bit later, as I want to swap out a few parts on the stroker. Or leave it with the LS1 and sell the stroker, as I fancy trying an LSX376...

I bought the ebay one. No 26. Its odd, because theres no rot at all on mine. Was no16 from scotland or the coast or something?
Monkfish worked on the car in the past, so it was reasonably local. Maybe it was a daily driver through a few harsh winters, whereas yours was a second car. Who knows??!Price on APs? That's the tenth time I've been asked
A new set plus braided lines is around £2100 from Monkfish (good price).
This set just had brand new discs, pads and braided hoses less than 500-miles ago at a cost of around £1700. I will need a set one day, as I have other projects. They never come up second hand, so I can't see me selling for less than I've paid so far on them; there's just no point.

Andrew. You wont need rear shocks to move it around should you? I bet you could find a set of knackered front struts to install, I might have a pair kicking around?
What colour are the seats. I assume they are Coulsons?
The interior is a light grey and, yes, the seats are leather Coulsons. Probably one of the most comfortable seats I've sat on.What colour are the seats. I assume they are Coulsons?
