Monaro alternator

Hi, for the past week my battery gauge has been dropping down to 12 whilst driving and then going back up to normal. Has been doing it every few minutes really. The check alternator sign has been flashing with the battery symbol but then goes off within the minute.

Obviously something is wrong but before I have time to check, does this sound like just a loose connection or can an alternator act like this if it was faulty?

Also if I do need a new one is there anywhere cheaper than monkfish or can you not fit other models to the monaro?

Thanks guys, I'll try and look at this weekend. Maybe it is just the earth wire because it's continously going off and on and hasn't failed yet.
