Evening all.

Had my 2005 cv8 health checked today resulting in a number of issues, so here goes...

1.Mass airflow - range performance.
2. O2 sensor bank 1 - sensor 1, bank 2 - sensor 1 faulty.

Is it possible these 2 problems are related? I'm going to get some new sensors but what about the maf?

3. Steering rack - play and leaking.

Thinking New track rods, wishbones, top mounts. Any common areas for ps leaking?

4. Front discs.

I've got the monaro ap calipers and I can't remember what sizes the discs are 363mm x 32mm x 12mm?

5. Transmission noise and vibration that needs further investigation.

I can get all gears apart from reverse which needs a gentle knock to get it in otherwise it'll pop out. There is some noise at slow speeds say 20mph coming from the rear somewhere. Doing a bit of reading it seems the monaro is a bit noisey but being my 1st I've nothing to compare against.

Tia for any advice,
Ste

the 02 sensors are not too difficult to change, as long as thread does not strip a bit of wd40 a few days before , i ordered mine from australia you just need to know which ones they were about 40£ or so for a pair of them , the plug is either flat or square so easy to id , i would do them and see if the maf resolves itself , if it does not try some maf cleaner first as you have nothing to loose by trying that , but only clean if it is showing an issue as normally not advised to clean it , you need to track down the ps leak , there is a ps cooler in front of the rad and are common to fail not that difficult to do , contact mokfish for the discs and any other parts , they keep a few options parts wise but brakes are not cheap , a clunk in drive train is normal but worth changing rear diff oil , some one posted recently which oil to use as no modifier is needed , the modifier is a friction additive , gearbox wise noisy is fairly normal , some times spigot bearing is an issue that is box off to change but some times noise is fine , mine has always been noisy and has been fine for last 5 years but how noisy is yours ? some times a bit of drive shaft play or a bit of a worn propshaft doughnut , struggling to get gears is normal spigot related but reverse is not unusual to be a bit of a fiddle so it may be fine , steering play probably the track rod ends , a quick rack works well and not too expensive , any thing else i think i covered your questions
Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I'll check the sensors tomorrow then and get them ordered. The car is running without any cats so throws up the check engine sometimes, mostly in 6th but also 5th. He cleared the o2 sensor fault, the car felt a bit better on the way home but the check engine error was on again 3 or 4 times and by the time I got home the car felt like before although that could be all in my head lol.

I'll change the diff oil, it has been done recently according to the history but I'll do it to rule it out.

The gearbox is not really that noisy in my opinion, there's a little speed related hum which could be the diff, I don't know. I don't hear any nasty knocks, can get all the gears other than reverse. Maybe he's seen something from underneath.

02 sensors are often lazy and maybe better than what you think they are but you need a laptop program to read it if they are sitting at 500 ? i believe it's 500 and not moving around they are knackered , 02 sensors faults some times come up on the dash for no reason , i wound not be lead by a garage who don't know the car as they are quirky and quirky can be totally normal so get things checked out but some things will be fine , if discs worn then yes need doing and ps leak , and play may need doing how much play as there play and plaaay if you know what i mean , any local members to you who maybe able to advise ?
When parking the wheels / steering is making clunking noises so I think I'll probably refresh the front end and get the pas sorted at same time.

I'm going to break it all down into manageable chunks lol.

Yeah probably a good idea to meet up with someone local so I can compare noises.

Cheers

a bit of clunk maybe normal depending what the issue is it's difficult to diagnose , it sounds like some issues are not issues but picked up by persons who don't know the car and it's quirks
Yes this could be very much the case lol. It's not like I drive the car and think the gearbox /diff are about to fall off.

the 02 sensors maybe fine , there are extension bungs for the 02 sensors that if there stop it throwing up cels , some one will be along to clarify this i'm sure , no cats will be an mot failure what about getting some sports cats welded in
Yep was already on the "to do" list fitting some cats. Just adding some o2 sensors to it.

I have just done my diff using Castrol Syntrax LSD/Limited Slip SAE 75W140 Synthetic Gear Oil 1 Litre.

You require to buy 2 litres.

No friction modifier required.

Funny you should say that, just been looking on opie oils at it.

Thanks smile

An '05 CV8 has 1 pair of lambda sensors if I remember correctly, so if you're running no cats that won't effect it as they're before the cats just after the 4 into 1 collector of the headers, as already said they do throw up faults quite regularly but are nothing to worry about. When you look at the PAS cooler infront of the rad be careful as the pipes rot quite badly and they can snap. Gearbox problem/noise as also already said are normal, they are clunky and noisy but if it is the spigot bearing get it done, it costs a few quid and it will take out the gearbox if it goes and they're like rocking horse shcensoredt. I also agree with last poster, get it to someone who knows these cars as they're quirky and different. Normally any clunking coming from the rear/underneath is the prop shaft donut, there's plenty of play in the driveshafts at the diff but the diff is solidly mounted to the rear subframe so if the bushes are on the way out then it moves and transfers the noise into the car when taking up the slack on pulling away. Hope this helps
Ok I'll check the sensors out, I thought there was 4 in total, probably me lol.

Yes definitely helps, thanks for the heads up with the spigot bearing, I'll get it looked at as I don't fancy a new box lol

Ok so I've just had a drive out, it's all pretty quiet round the back end. The only noise is happening between 0 -25 mph occasionally, sounds like it's coming low down wheel height. It's not a squeak or clonk more a groan lol.

Gearbox feels good, all gears present and happy other than reverse. Got a ripshifter fitted, might give it a clean up.

I know it's hard diagnosing things on the Web so thanks fellas, appreciated.

It could possibly be the wheel bearings, it does come from roughly that area but hard to tell, it does sound similar to a binding caliper.

Going to have a look at O2 sensors in a bit ( after breakfast lol) get them ordered along with some diff oil.

Guys, just been out having a look at O2 sensors. There are 2 just after the manifolds and another 2 which I presume would be after the cats if I had any.

Both pre and post have 4 wires in a square shape.

Two exhausts and nostril bonet is VXR not CV8 and small boot is later car after it was changed to pass USA safety crash tests I believe
Didn't the 05 cv8 get updated though including nostrils and 2 exhausts. It's got a cv8 badge on the back and there's no vxr stuff anywhere.

A bit of mis-information here chaps!

Ste: As you know, yours is the same as mine; a facelift CV8 with two tailpipes, nostril bonnet, small boot and four O2 sensors. It's not a VXR/HSV.

It'll most likely be the post-cat sensors that are causing you trouble, seeing as you don't have any cats. I believe you can disable them via a remap.

Let me know if you want to compare clonks, you know where I live!

Steve
Hi mate.

Yes that would be good to hear another monaro noises, that advisory list and reading different things has got my head all over the place lol.

I've still got your number so I'll send you a text later if that's ok?

What he said ^^^^.

Plenty of confusion on this thread..............
Lol.

I was certain I had a facelift CV8 but being new and hearing something different but doubt in my mind.

Anyway, appreciate all the help. Im pretty sure my transmission noises are the monaro norm...... Hopefully
