Coolant level expansion tank

Just checking the coolant level,the expansion tank as next to nothing in it :-( what level should the coolant be in the tank? topping up, should that be just filling it via the expansion tank or into the long tank?

Thanks for the replies, All topped and fingers crossed that the coolant stays put, as mentioned in my post there was only about 10mm of coolant at the bottom of the header tank, the level in the swirl pot was just above the hose. I have topped the swirl pot up the top and the header tank around half way......
