Hey guys,

Looking to move back to Jap cars later this year (some point over the summer).

My heart is saying RX7 FD3, good power, potential classic and being a turbo can tune it fairly easily if I wanted.
Down side, large bork factor, high fuel costs.

Head is saying S2000, roadster, solid reliability sound pretty awesome and should be a cheapish to run weekend car.

I want something thats fun on the weekends, something that I can tinker with in the garage but also can take abuse on the road and track.

Anyone owned both? If so what are your thoughts?

The car will be a pure weekend toy so mpg etc dosnt really bother me too much.

I would like something that gives the same thrill as the Tuscan did (something I am not sure the S2000 will deliver on) but without massive service costs. This will be partly battled by self servicing, something I could't do on the Tuscan due to the all important stapped service histoy.

I think I am swaying towards an RX7, plus if I can get a 2+2 my wife and little one (when the time comes) can come along to shows/events (she is very short lol)

Question to those who have owned an RX7, what do you think of the noise? My brother has an RX8 which is a little flat sounding, it hasn't got much going for it other than a change in pitch.

My supras would give a good burble with the nice whoosh of turbo induction, and well the TVR sounded like nothing else (not expecting much to make that noise again).

I have been on youtube but you never really get the same sounds through as you do in person.

Oh your bad people!

Just spent the weekend listening to ported single turbo rex's!

Well that made my mind up lol.

As soon as the misses gets her self employed after her redundancy I shall be on the look out.

Next step, listen to some full bridge-ported FDs wink
Ooh they sound dirty smile

Seems to add so much more character to the motor. Can they be road legal with all that or are MOT's a no no?

Well the time has come smile

Off to see this next week, it is currently undergoing a full engine rebuild and will have a resprayed bonnet and 99+ front bumper.

It looks to have had a stock spoiler on there think its the R2 (2 struts).
Any idea if the 99+ spoiler fits the same holes? If so I may see if he can spray one up at the same time as the bumper for some extra 's

Old Spoiler holes

I am quite excited smile

Plan B would be to go for the FEED Type II wing but they are a bit pricey frown

Have you signed up to FDUK yet? there are regularly cars being broken and parts being sold over there, it may well be that something nice pops up on there and the prices are usually much more reasonable than the standard Ebay floggers!
I am on FDUK and the Rotary Club sites, keeping an eye out smile

Engine is stock, need to find out if anything has been done to the fuel system etc.

I plan on getting a Greddy Ti Exhaust to start with and then start looking into mods to keep it more reliable, such as Rad, fuel pump and remapping.

Over the winter I will be looking into decats and all the supporting mods to ensure it dosnt go bang smile

I think the guy selling the car has a FC commander avaliable so will see if he will include it in the sale.

I have been reading up on base maps and guides. Never needed to map the supra I had so its all new to me, seems very interesting.

Am I right in thinking most mods are safe on the base map but it needs tuning when the cat comes out?

Also what happens when the cat goes back for mot's? Can you save different maps or do you have to tweak the fuel settings?

Sorry for the amount if questions

Went to see the RX7 on Wednesday (our 3rd year wedding anniversary of all days...wife's idea!)

Body work was in good order, bonnet is getting resprayed due to decals causing the paint to fade. Everything checks out paper work wise and currently just discussing the extras.

It will come with a +99 front and wing as well as an Apexi ECU which will be mapped along with the engine rebuild smile

First plans will be suspension, breaks and bushes and then cooling mods and replacement hoses for the rats nest etc.

Just waiting to hear for an eta on the engine rebuild.

Decided on keeping the engine 100% standard for now, will be looking at engine mods in the future no doubt. For now I just want it running as reliably as possible and ensure the chassis is all updated.

Another (biased) RX7 owner here. You are correct on fuel costs (20-22mpg) but I've had excellent reliability in the last 7 years (~25K miles). One window switch died but that's it. Two kids (age 11/7) can squeeze in the back with 5'6" adult in the front.

Noise, well mine is stock and you can't hear the exhaust. Intake/engine noise is quiet, more like a jet turbine that a piston engine. The excitement comes from how fast it moves.

To minimise bork, the 99' front helps (2x cooling area).
Got a 99 spec front going on as part of the build, will be updating all the cooling over winter smile

20-22mpg is pretty good! I keep hearing people say they are running in the mid teens. My tuscan would get around 25 on a good run but would often be around the 18-19mpg.

Although i appreciate that mine will be worse with a street port and remap etc I would suggest that 22 mpg will probably be the outlier rather than the norm for your consumption.. especially if you like pressing on regularly.. sequential turbos do some scary things to your fuel gauge once both are on song.

Personally I'm now practically on first name basis with the staff at my local shell garage as i seem to be in there daily biggrin

Lmao well its strictly a toy so fuel dosnt bother me too much smile I might keep a record just for the lols
