Hi,

This is my first thread so I apologise if it's in the wrong area. I'm British and looking to buy (preferably) a Jap car. Why? Who knows, they've always seemed appealing to me. I really like the idea of saving up for an R34 skyline or a supra, but the problem is the engine size is too large.

As I'm still a student at uni, I can't afford to run those types of cars. I am looking to buy nothing larger than a 1.4. But I'm very picky on the shape of the car. Can anyone suggest anything that isn't so common please?

I know this is vague, but any help / advice would really be appreciated!

Thanks in advanced!

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far!

The toyota sera is EXACTLY the sort of thing I'm after, except the engine is still too large for me at the moment. Ideally it should be a 1.2 - 1.3. Me saying a 1.4 is pushing is, but if the car is perfect then that's not much more of a stretch. But a 1.5 is definitly too much for insurance and to generally run being the cheap student I am haha

Had a look at the kei cars, non seem to match up but thank you nonetheless

Definitely looking for some more suggestions, or just a list and I can have a google myself, cheers!

yeah had a look at the colt, just wasn't the right style for me unfortunately. I was picky about the engine size for fuel consumption, having spent £50 a week on my 1.1 (I accelerate a lot and drive on a motorway) I didn't want my new car to have an even more expensive petrol tariff.

Decided to go with a 1.3 Proton Gen 2 =)

- found it on by looking at similar cars from suggestions so not wasted time!

Haha I know!

but when I stumbled upon the gen 2, it was just so perfect. I only originally said japanese cars because I'd never buy a German car, and am quite familiar with fords and vaxhual/opel, so thought it would be good to venture out to the Jap area :P

Had a look at the glanza/starlet - looks a bit like the civic type R? fairly sure I'm still set on the proton gen 2 though. It has really low insurance and tax, and is a 1.3 (my engine spec requirement) and I like the way it looks in general! and it's much newer than the other cars we were talking about before which is always a bonus

I'm British, I'm going to assume you're not. Insurance for going drivers is always in the thousands here, not cheap at all and students here don't get much money.

Just for the record, I've had no claims at all/accidents for 2 years and insurance on a 1.2 is about £1600

Had a look at an rx-7. Thought it might be an insurance exception because it 'only has' a 1.3l and the quote for that was 4.5k

How long have you been driving for and how old are you now? If you don't mind me asking

So first things first - I got told my a few people that the Proton Gen 2 had terrible build quality and to stay away from it. I was originally looking for a solid motor which is why this is in the Jap section and am back to the drawing board of an uncommon motor to buy!

1.2-1.3l (low cost fuel consumption), preferably Jap but not picky if it's a solid car/make, and something very uncommon that you don't see everyday please!

right, replies:

@TREMAiNE: I'm really not sure how you're insurance is that cheap. Anyone my age as in my mates that have cars have similar prices to what I'm saying and give me the same reaction I gave you when you told me about your insurance prices. Had a peak at your link, liking what I saw, and cheers for the info - gave me some perspective!

@eybic: I had no idea about that at all! Honestly the most useful insurance tip I've had to date (that wasn't common sense). I still, however, would like a lower engine to the original spec to reduce the cost in fuel consumption. I'd much prefer a 1.3 even though it isn't as powerful as a 2.0 just because of the amount of fuel it would take to run.

@StottyEvo: Can you give me an example performance car that would be cheap to insure just so I can compare and contrast what you're saying please? As with TREMAiNE's RX-7/8's they came back very expensive to insure on quickquotes.

@Claudia Skies: The colt isn't for me, I'm very picky about the shape, but thanks for the suggestion nonetheless!

I'd really appreciate any uncommon cars that are 1.2-1.3l that you could suggest for me to have a look at! Really like semi-saloons like the Proton gen-2 / skyline's. But also liked the Toyota Sera (think it was Toyota?) that someone suggested before - except it's too old. Preferably under 10years old would be handy too but not essential if it lasts/looks retro

Rear end is horrible!

Would be looking for a 4/5 seater though, regardless. Cheers for the suggestion though fella

i would never get an electric or hybrid car, they're just not for me for so many reasons. thank you though!

leaning towards the mazda3 tbh, seems to run fairly well and is cheapish to insure
