Hi all
I am looking at buying a REAL car, instead of the 2000cc BMW I have at the moment.

I went to test drive a 1997 GTST earlier today, and while it needs some TLC it is resonably priced at £3k. The only trouble is:
a) It's automatic. It's not something I really want, but I can live with that, at least until I get the funds to convert it.
b) The exhaust is ludicrous. It must be 3 inhes wide and its the only modification done to the car at all. It sound wonderful on the outside, but inside it is so loud that hurts yor ears, it kind of resonates to the point it blocks anything else out.

So I have a couple of questions. Is it possible its just something vibrating that's loose? Or is it just because the exhaust is so ridiculously big? I haven't driven a car with an exhaust anything like that bore before. Also, is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise other than replacing the exhaust outright with a smaller one? Because that is some way out of my budget at this point in time.

Thanks guys

Forgive my ignorance, but that's the mufffler tip, right? And the flared bit is where it attaches to the exhaust?

The one I looked at earlier didnt seem to have a box, just one long pipe to around halfway along the car, where there was a section about a foot long that I would guess is the cat converter.

Is it normal for a car with an exhaust bore that large to make that much noise inside the cab though? I mean, at 3k rpm it actually resonates to the point you can feel inside your skull.

I am kinda hoping that it is just a loose bracket or something, so it's not too difficult to adjust. This is the car in question. Excuse the terrible lighting in the pictures, I didn't take it...

Can do if it's just a straight pipe from the cat back.
So if that's the case would it be a muffler that I need or a whole exhaust?

I don't own the car yet, and it's a 1 1/2 hour drive from me. I didn't get a repsonse from my post earlier in this thread about where to find it, can you tell me where the guy needs to look?

Oooooohhh I see what you mean, so this whole section in red is the bung? That screw hole is just how it attaches?

I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference to the sound in the cab though...

Ok I understand how it works now. With it reducing the bore what kind of effect is that likely to have on performance, are we talking any noticeable drop?

I already have a price on the car from AdrianFlux. Its this damn exhaust that's bugging me.

I have asked a couple of mechanics, and they said it may be better to get a silencer manufactured for the mid pipe, but they wont try it themselves. They keep telling me to go to this guy near me that works especially on drift cars, and charges the world.

I mean seriously, I dont want to race, drag, or drift. I just want to drive the damn thing and not go deaf/get headaches while I'm doing so. So a bung is a bad idea, that valve is just a more advanced version of the same thing, and cat back exhausts only seem to come for racing. I'm really getting a bit stuck for options :/

post that on the skyline forums.
I'll try it. I have someone on a different forum that has a 3" for sale for £135 as well, with 2 silencers. I'll see what comes up smile
