EVO 6 - worth a punt?

..continuing my search of possible "Toys" have been looking at the EVO 6, the car I lusted after back in 1999-2000. Seen some nice ones for around £7K and I cant help thinking they wont get much cheaper...what with Audi Quattros and other stuff sky rocketing in value.
So two questions, 1) are they worth a punt right now as a car that wont lose value and 2) can they still cut in a world of sub 8 minute Nurburgring lapping hot hatches.
I ask question 2 because I got badly burned in 2008 on a ten year old Mk1 UK Impreza which didn't drive as well as I remembered when they were knew and then dropped a bottom end bearing!
The progress of cars has been extraordinary so I don't want to buy something that now will feel dated!
