During the past summer, our family Eurohoon continued down south to home of Oktoberfest in Munich where we stopped at the BMW Welt (World) and the BMW Museum. After the Motorsport-rich heritage of Porsche in Stuttgart, it was a mild surprise to see the pride in all things 2 wheeled at the BMW Museum. One thing that stood out was the innovation that drove BMW to adapt from planes, to motorbikes, to cars through the years... they are a relatively very young company compared to the stalwarts of Mercedes, yet they have clearly placed both motorsport and market innovation at the forefront of all development. A stunning plant/museum in the Munich Olympic Village, and well worth spending the day there...

Also went on the BMW Factory tour where they manufacture the 3 series saloon and the M3 engine (M3 saloon and coupe is assembled at Dingolfing)... but sadly no photos allowed! This was definitely worthwhile - note, you need to book ahead of going - do so, it's well worth it. The robots are amazing to watch, and they appear almost human/Transformer-esque!... fascinating to watch and walk through the different phases of production from body panel/chassis pressings through to engine manufacture, painting, and assembly.

Finally, the infamous BMW Art Cars are stunning... far better in the metal that I had expected smile

Thanks chaps smile Definitely worth a full day taking it all in. Whatever you do, pre-book the factory tour as it is limited spaces per day and requires pre-booking. The factory tour takes a few hours where you see the 3 series being made: from panel pressing through to the paintshop, it's really well organised and you can ask all manner of questions.
