BMW Brake Discs
Discussion
Many thanks for the torque values searched high and low on the net yesterday for hours without success.
Didn't purchase new sensor wires as the pads are fine, although worn, so no wear/contact on sensor; its the discs that are below/around the minimum thickness driving the change and I would never put old pads with new discs so its a full set of discs and pads.

How do they measure wear?
As far as I was aware the sensor is simply a mechanism that, by grounding with the disc, identifies when the pads have reached a minimum (do something now) thickness.
My car has already had one set of pads, front and rear, and only had front sensor replaced as it had activated the brake (pad thickness) warning light.

Car that run CBS have dual stage sensors with 2 wire that trigger at different times, so you need to inspect your sensors to see what has been triggered, if anything, 1st trigger is at about 50% pad wear. To save arsing around pulling wheels twice it easier to change it all at the same time it 's not like the sensors are expensive, but your call.
I was simply saying I didn't realise sensors were two stage.Having removed front left I can confirm that although no brake warning light on dash contact has been made on disc so assume first 'wire' triggered (still loads of meat on pad though). On this basis will be parking job until tomorrow when I can purchase the sensors, front and rear (car has one at front left and one at rear right)
Couple of queries arising from this:-
Rear sensor - Euro Parts list two with no apparent difference between 106110488 and 106110938
If I haven't triggered the second wire how do I do a reset?

What year is your car?
Car is September 2010.Funny thing is when i took the rear brakes apart the rear sensor still hadn't contacted the disc (at all) but due to its age I suppose a corner of the backing of the sensor split off as I pulled it off the pads!
Other problem was the new rear discs; there were two listed with Europarts so I rang them and they told me I needed part 104111056 (Textar discs) when I stripped rear this afternoon the disc supplied is too shallow (wheel mating face to back of disc by about 10-15mm so taking an old one with me when I go to pick up sensors tomorrow and hope they can change.

Get in the car , close the door, ensure all doors are closed.
Turn on ignition but do not start the car.
Press & hold the trip meter reset button for approx 10 seconds, until 1st service item is displayed in display between your speedo and tacho.
Toggle through the various service items using the up/down rocker on your indicator stalk, until you get to front brakes.
Press in and hold for approx 3 seconds the button on the end of your indicator stalk until 'Reset' appears, then release the button and press and hold for approx 3 seconds.
Reset should occur, repeat process for rear brake.
HTH.
Thanks for this, just need to finish front offside in morning, quick bleed, and then all ready to reset. btw found the original sensor from front (I don't throw anything away, a bad habit that comes in useful sometimes) and used original which was on the rear at motor factors this morning to get exact match, also picked up the correct rear discs which were Pagid rather than Textar.Turn on ignition but do not start the car.

Thanks again,

all physical works completed.
Sat in car to do reset and after pressing the trip button for 10 seconds got a code up thats when the method described didn't work as planned, scrolling the up down on the indicator stalk did nothing but pressing the trip button did scroll thro some codes (with every individual press of the trip button) one of which was the build datum showing 14/07/10.
Any ideas?
Will have a look in the owners manual.
Took the car for a short road test and new brakes bedding in fine.

Locknut: this did cross my mind but the codes I get up are the only thing that come up after 10 seconds, before that its simply the mileage and trip display other than the warning triangle came up after about three seconds but when i take my finger off the trip reset this goes out.
Last time the brakes were changed (front) when the dash warning came on and this was pretty simply to reset.
I have read on other threads where people have shorted the sensor to make the dash warning display (brake warning and lift) and then reset this.
A trip to BMW looks the likely solution as the kind folk there set a 600 mile service display (at my last general service) when they told me the brake discs were due for renewal (despite never having had the wheels off to measure the disc thickness!).

Here's a description of the procedure:

It seems from step 3 that you may have over-shot the runway!
This description uses the left stalk on the steering column. I believe it can be done using the i-drive knob but I have not tried it yet.
Many thanks the reset method in this string worked for my 2010 120d Convertible SE with M Sport Suspension, quick summary for anyone looking for parts for this model http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165... (see post 4 on that page)

Discs Front Textar
Discs Rear Pagid (these are the deeper discs 76mm rather than 66mm)
All pads Textar
Sensors, one front, one rear, both Pagid (Straight not right angle)
All parts sourced via EuroCarParts
Final job - handbrake to be adjusted
Thanks again for help/advice folks
