would I regret moving to mercedes?
Discussion
I think the answer is "not necessarily". I've had a few BMWs, currently have a 530D. Also have a Mercedes 350SLK which has replaced our Z4.
Much prefer the SLK to the Z as a drive, though I chose the 530 over an E350 or a 350CLS earlier this year.
Both good brands; IMO the BMWs are a bit more advanced technologically, but the MBs have better build quality/finish/materials.
Horses for courses, but both brands have a full stable for you to choose from.

its a tricky one but as most know already my e39 rocks but its getting oldish and its peaked and id like to get my wife into something different as weve never had a car as long as the e39...
I did toy with the idea of an e61 touring as well as c5 rs6 from a mate but ruled them both out very quickly for the same reasons
I then thought an e61 550i sport touring would be nice but as you all know they are a bit scarce....
I then stumbled across the e55 and thought it would fit the bill nicely as the new family barge but then read a bit more about the supercharged bit and cost to replace the usual wear and tear items so thought it might be as wallet destroying as the m5 and rs6....
yesterday I stumbled across the c55 and apart from the potential squeeze in the back and limited boot space.... its looks like it fills a gap that bmw might struggle with... ie its theoretical peer in the bmw world would be an e60/1 m3 touring right???
I could hang on for a 335 sport touring but im thinking that the c55 might be a bit more thrilling and ive never had a v8 before
problem is that they seem as rare as the 550 sport touring so back to square one!

andy you have bmw blood running through your veins don't you!!
I own 2 x bms, but what the badge is means nothing to me, I drive them due to the way they do what they do and having tried several mercs, none have done anything for me. I have always found THE ONES I HAVE TRIED to be numbing to drive.ill be the first to admit im a fan of them and now on my third if you count an alpina... however, I am partial to a bit of v8 action and in that respect im happy to consider a new stablemate for the alpina and if that means it wears a new badge then that's fine too...
still I have to admit that the prospect of being without an e39 is a rather glum one but ill separate my emotions from the pragmatist in me on this one!

I drove a CLS320CDI for some distance.
Cabin noise is much quieter v a 3 series
Engine performance is notably worse
Brakes I found significantly weaker
Handling - its much more comfort over sport.
Personally idrive is superior.
Seems an odd comparison to make? Try a C63 against an M3. Different but both pretty good.Cabin noise is much quieter v a 3 series

It's interesting how brands can generate such disparate images for people. I've been the same in the past; when I owned a 911 I thought nothing else would do. I always saw BMW as more 'sporty' than MB.
The real truth is that all of the premium brands have boring, 'old fart' cars, sporty cars and proper sports cars in their ranges, and keeping an open mind is sometimes beneficial.
You pays your money etc.

I heard its been made compulsory to bumble around and constantly get in peoples way when driving a Merc?
I may have misheard
My own personal observations seem to support this.I may have misheard
I seem to see more mb drivers will straight-line multi-lane roundabouts/blind bends and generally perform death-wish manoeuvres than most others......
Also I have issues with a company that advertises its auto gearbox as its best....
When I cant be bothered to turn the wheel to avoid others and cant be bothered to change gear, I will have lost the will to live, & only then will I consider a mercedes.
