I'm considering changing my super reliable E60 530d for an E70 X5 with the 7 seat option. Anyone running a >100k mile'r and can provide a view of common faults, reliability, running costs. Anything I should be looking for? Budget of ~15K, ideally MSport trim but must have 7 seats, xenons, pro nav, leather.

Also, what are they like to live with? I've had a couple of 5's and they're really are superb places to be for both short and long distances but we've outgrown the space now.

A little slow to respond but thanks to both of you. We're going away in 2 weeks time to Devon and it would be great to find one in time but the real target is our holiday in Lake Garda in August. We're doing a road trip through France and Switzerland and back so I need to find one ideally in the next 2 weeks but realistically before August.

Next question. All the BMW's I have had (e36 M3, e39 530i, e60 530d) have been MSports. I had never even considered an SE but the ride in the e60 on RFT's is hard and crashy. I know it's well documented that non-RFT's does improve this but I'm starting to wonder if an SE is the way to go?

Seems to be that the ride is softer and I get a lot more car for my budget at the cost of not "quite" the look I want and residuals seem to suffer. Anyone prepared to offer an opinion?

Seems a reasonable approach to me. I'm guilty of fixating on the trim level so will look at SE's also. From what I have read, the 7 seat option has air suspension also to mitigate sickness.

Good to hear first hand feedback, cheers. What have running costs been like during your ownership?

Quick question, this quote:

Sounds like you take your car to Europe a bit...that would swing it to the X5 for me. Dynamically it is miles ahead of the X5...engine is better and handling is much better.
Did you mean the X5 is miles ahead of E60?

Lots very helpful comments, thanks chaps.

So it seems that a 2008 version has a more sensible £285 road fund cost rather than £485 per year. I've upped my budget to $17k now and focussing on SE's. Looking for a sub-100k mile, 7 seats, visibility and media packs with privacy glass. Not a huge amount out there but will update if/when I find one.

Quick thread update. I upped my budget so I could get an 08 plate or later as I just couldn't stomach the thought of £485 per year on road fund!

Been looking daily for ages now and one came up. I was totally happy with an SE but a black 2008 M-Sport came up with all my must have options; Xenon's, Bluetooth, Media package with USB/AUX In, black heated leather and 19" wheels, 73K on the clock, FSH and crucially, 7 seats. Couple of brucie bonuses thrown in with the factory fitted detachable tow bar, memory seats, silver trim and rubber mats.

And it's now sat on my drive biggrin Thanks for all the good guidance chaps, it was helpful!

Very well thanks!

Once I had removed the st tints from the front windows (PITA job), new battery and new front tyres (Toyo Proxies), the car is fairly straight. Root caused an Increased Emissions as split vacuum pipe which was slow to diagnose but quick to fix. Apart from that, it'll need lower suspension arms later this year.

Love the elevated seating position and the 19's make for a sensible ride (Very keen not to repeat the e60 on runflats experience). 28.8 MPG average is within tolerances.

Rarely get let out of junctions and constantly tailgated is an odd side effect.

In better news, Wednesday next week, my wife, our 3 kids and I leave for a road trip to Lake Garda, initially spending a few days in Dieppe to see family and then on through Switzerland, over the Alps to Garda. ~1200mls in total to get there. Should be awesome and I'll update this thread with observations of the car.

Just over 2 years of ownership and 26k added to the clock. The car is absolutely brilliant and does everything I need to it with ease. Whether it pulling a trailer with enduro bikes on in and out of fields, european trips with the family or commuting 70 miles per day, it does everything really well. Big fan of the X5.

Not had any significant faults other than normal consumables. Tyres I've got a whopping 26k from non-names on the rear it came with and Toyo's on the front which still have loads of life in them. If I was buying again, I would have bought an LCI with the improved 8 speed box and navigation etc.

Any specific questions you have?

The car was faultless to Garda and back including a stopover in Interlaken in Switzerland, just short of 2000 miles returning 28.6mpg. Roof Box and perhaps the bike rack with bikes on didn't help the mpg. Last year we did 1 week in the south of France followed by a week in Interlaken in Switzerland. We actually did the return trip from Interlaken to home in one hit, around 700 miles taking about 15 hours IIRC. The car ate the miles up.
