Hi all,

The instrument cluster on my brothers E46 has gone kaput - I sent it off to clusterrepairsuk who got back to me today and said the software has become corrupt due to a power surge in the car. They cannot do a reflash and I will need a replacement.

BMW have quoted me in the region of £900 for a new part + coding to the vehicle which we cannot afford by any means at all right now. The car is needed for him to get to work but to be honest at this rate, we want to sell it soon.

The other option I have is to source a used cluster as close a match to mine as possible - But I have NO idea where I can get this coded to the car? No garage will touch a used one and I'm getting lost in the phone calls.

i DO know that if we code a used one, a tamper dot will arise. Is there no way around this? I assume if we do this then we are stuck with the car for life/scrap it. Are there any legal implications to the tamper dot?

We would appreciate your help on the matter as this is driving us nuts.

You can stick in any cluster from a similar engine, and you'll get the dials working. Coding would sort out any other minor issues, and the tamper light isn't too hard to get rid of.
A dash clocker should be able to sort out the finer points too, like mileage and he'd also be able to get rid of the tamper dot.
Do you have anyone you can direct me to? Via PM?

I understand people see dash clocking as an illegal thing but genuinely this is simply because I have no other option. I dont have £945 to fork out for this repair.
