Afternoon all

My car has head-up display, and unfortunately has a huge stone chip in the windscreen and so needs a new windscreen. I believe HUD uses a special windscreen so I am wondering what experience is out there of using an autoglass (or other generic glass replacement company obviously) windscreen rather than going to BMW which will obviously cost a few quid. I've used them for replacement screens plenty of times without HUD and never had a problem, so more concerned whether the HUD increase the risk of problems.

Thanks for any input

Excellent, cheers. They have said they will use an OEM screen which is good. Unfortunately, they are not in stock and the MOT is due in a week!

Not enough detail in the OP, however:

a.). chips can be repaired;

b.). if a replacement windscreen is in order, the best available product is OE, not an 'OE equivalent' or A.N.Other without the car manufacturer branding;

c.). there is no special procedure - or skill - required to fit an HUD windscreen (as long as you are using the correct parts and materials, and use them in the correct way)

d.). you are not restricted to one supplier, or the one your insurer wants you to use.

Many thanks. Although the chip is about the size of a £2 coin, it has been hit with something very hard so the glass is effecting smashed into a lot of pieces within the circle so pretty sure it is beyond repair. Imagine it has been hit with a hammer and you would have a good idea.

Autoglass have order an OE one from BMW so pretty sure it will be the right quality - they have 'the equivalent' in stock but the insurer has authorised OE so will wait for it to arrive. I have also asked my dealer how quickly they can get one as autoglass couldn't give me an ETA. It needs a MOT next week so I'll be commuting in a 1.1 Clio if I don't get one in time!
