A few questions for the masses - appreciate your help:
1.) I have a driving liicence pre 2000 - from what I've read that means I only require a DAS to get mobile? Does that mean I don't have to CBT? And hence it's a week to get a licence?
2.) What buyers tips do I need when buying a Desmo?

Sorry for the late reply – have had a busy day. Thanks to all for the replies/ribbing/banter etc.
So first up I am talking about a Ducati Desmosedici RR. I’ve always been a car man through and through, but picked up a bike mag a while ago saw a Desmo and loved the looks. Then made the fateful mistake of watching a few YouTube videos and doing a bit or research and that was me hooked.
So combination of how it looks, how it sounds and the history if how it came about makes me just want to get one.
I also think it’ll be a reasonable investment, given:
1.) they’re unlikely to make a bike like that for the road again
2.) it really is an ultimate bike (like the F1 to cars)
3.) I feel bikes just haven’t caught up with cars on the appreciation curve (appreciate there is a more limited market, 1,500 were made etc - but significant bikes seem undervalued)
….well, that’s what I’ve told Mrs Duggan…
So, naturally, the first step is to get a licence – hence the question
I’ve also checked into insurance and there are other specialist brokers who’ll cover me – mid four figures on a few calls to them recently
Then it’s a case of getting one – prices seem to vary from 30-39k with 800-10,000 miles and only other spec differences seem to be the GP exhaust (I think this was an optional extra?) and/or the 17inch rear wheel (for tyre choice). Am fully aware that a limited carbon fibre clad is going to be expensive to repair – need to make sure I don’t drop/crash it. Would be good to hear if anyone has any other tips/things to look out for and also will be speaking to the professionals when finding the right one.
I was also looking at getting another bike (as advised by a few of you – thanks), as want to keep the miles down on the Desmo & to give me an easier ride to experience – was thinking 749R/999R.
And I would be one of those c0cks with chicken strips, but hey, we all had to start somewhere

Passed my Mod 1 Yesterday (perfect run with no issues and a 60kph emergency stop!) and...........
Passed my Mod 2 today (with one minor)
(PS - although I did have some textiles & wet weather gear for the test - Any excuse to get the suit on & need to make it look a little used at least!)
Now firstly to get this titanium masterpiece out of my back in January & recover from that:
Then get some more training & get a 899 Panigale to get some miles under my belt - then onto the Desmo

1199 S Tricolore - going to be a nice first bike
Popped into the bike salesroom this morning to check everything over (I'd stuck a deposit over the phone once the deal was done and wanted to see it in the flesh before handing over the cash) and the bike is just stunning. They had the full Panigale range in there from the 899 up to the 1199R and IMHO the Tricolore is the best looking bike Ducati currently make by a mile.
Mine is standard other than carbon hugger and Ducati tail-tidy - just needs nothing else.
Can't wait for it to arrive next Saturday

That'said, if you're inclined to do some trackways on one, I think you'd enjoy it the most, as a first road bike, I think it's just about the worst you could've got, though!
Goo blooming steady til you get used to a proper big bike,they're light as fook for a suspect sorts bike, but you still have to muscle the flickers around the turns compared to a DAS bike. Plus you'll be going s
t loads faster.

Thanks for the advice - I've got relatively quiet roads around near me, so I'll just be getting back into it locally first before venturing anywhere. I've also got time booked in with my instructor to brush-up/get used to the bike - just so excited about getting it! As for the kitchen jibe - I don't think the guy was aware that the kitchen is nearly worth as much as a Desmo (Gaggenau range/Wolf Oven/Miele Microwave/Sub-Zero Fridge etc) - but I didn't want to come across as a knob(and it was quite funny - the Mrs doesn't even cook!)

Picked the bike up from Metropolis in Vauxhall and as anyone who's been there, it's straight out onto a one-way system, followed by a drive across busy Saturday morning London streets - just what's needed when you combine a Panigale Tricolore with a novice rider. But what a first bike
Will post up some proper pics tomorrow - just have to either stare at it or ride it at the moment (in "Wet" or "Learner" mode as I call it)...

Interesting to read all of the comments and I genuinely didn't think getting a Desmo, or even a Panigale Tricolore for that matter, as a first bike would stoke up such a debate - it's great that everyone has an opinion & is willing to offer advice. I do now concur that getting a Desmo as a first bike would have been a steep learning curve & even a step too far - best I learn for a few months first
I really do appreciate the advice - bike experience I may not have, but I do have two things that most of you don't have. Firstly, I know what it's like when it goes wrong - and we're not talking "that was a close one" - the real-deal. That experience alone will ensure I'm not spinning the wheel up in 6th on any public road. Secondly, I know what it's like to think you're taking your last breath and the thoughts of "I wish I'd done this/wish I'd done that", so for me, it's all now about following your dreams - here's a few pics from today:

Overall a great day out and a cracking ride back from Silverstone to my parents for Sunday Lunch. Took the Stowe/Buckingham/Aylesbury/Great Missenden route on the A414 - what a bike road
- I even say a Panigale Superleggera going the other way!A few bike firsts for me today also; first drive on a Motorway (M1), which at 0730hrs really was cold and had to hunker down on the tank to keep warm. I also let my Parents know I'd got a bike - I might just as well have told them I've taken up Heroin - think they'll calm down over time & arriving in full leathers & all the trimmings may just have been a bit too much
. So a weekend where I felt 18 years old all over again - roll on the summer Great to see I’m flying in the face of the PH Bike “Rule Book”, where you’re guaranteed an untimely end if you buy a high end bike as your first steed, will die of embarrassment if anyone even sees the hint of a chicken-strip or heaven-forbid use a paddock stand…in a paddock

So riding up to Silverstone from London, spending an hour and a half having something to eat and shooting the breeze with a few friends and then back on a mixture of M/A/B roads, combined with London afternoon traffic is not enough - 200 miles in the day? What would you have done - jump 18 double-deckers in the car park How has he riding experience been so far?
Joking aside, the bike is actually not as intimidating as I thought it would be. I've only had it two weeks now/only started to learn to ride in November, so I've still got it set in Wet-Mode (120bhp) while I continue to learn & get further lessons. You just need to be careful and measured with throttle/steering/braking - nothing new to anyone, I'm sure.
It does feel fast even in wet mode, so I can't even begin to imagine what race (195bhp - supposedly..) is going to be like. That's the beauty of the bike - I don't have to learn on a less powered machine and then mess about having to sell-it and buy another - the Tricolore just turns it's wick up at the touch of a button. That and the fact it's a beautiful piece of engineering
Another weekend and only one morning out on the Tricolore 
Managed to make the pilgrimage to the Ace Cafe though (have been there many a time with cars, but the first time up there on a bike). They had an Adventure Motorbike show on and the place was packed - no pressure then - but managed to manoeuvre through the crowds and park-up.
Some fascinating machinery there too - favourite bikes for me were the round-the-world Honda Cubs - just seemed like a nigh on impossible journey, combined with a real sense of adventure & summed up the spirit of motorbiking.
Then off to a family friends place on the way home to show off the new toy - any member of my family seems to think I either resemble a turtle or a spaceman the first time they see me in leather
Also managed to get a few close-up shots of the bike - I'm no photography-geek, but just had to get a few shots of the different lines of the bike - could look at it all day long
