Manual Cam Chain Tensioners?

Morning,

My CBR is making the familiar "My Honda CCT is fked" noise. This will be the 2nd one in less than 14,000 miles. This one lasted about 6-7,000 and they're about £70-£80 a pop.

Anyone use a manual tensioner? Are they as good as the original and is it easy to get the tension correct?

I don't want to compromise my engine in any way, but I'm worried one is going to let go and leave me stranded or worse.

Ordered one and a gasket from stateside. £39 before HMRC rape so pretty cheap comparatively. It's reassuring to hear you guys are running them on trackbikes.

It's just the initial clatter whilst it's loose and I tighten it that worries me. But I suppose it's only a few seconds.
