Best for what? I love the BMW S1000 I get to ride, the power is awesome, the traction control fun in rain mode on dry roads, and the quickshifter is really good to have, and not the novelty I thought it would be.
But I prefer the GSX-R1000 as it feels that little bit more substantial and is that bit more comfortable after 9 or 10 hours in the saddle. The gearing is good, the finish has lasted really well (it's ridden all year round) and nothing has broken in 25,000 miles.
I found the Fireblade gives a great impression of lightness, and it is very narrow in comparison to the S1000 and GSX-R, and can feel a bit skittish on poorly surfaced road (like throughout London), and on back lanes. Superb on nicely surfaced roads.
I have only ridden a (crossplane) R1 once for a few hours, but didn't like the ergonomics at all, the feel of the engine was just odd to me, and I just didn't like it.
I've not ridden a Kawasaki sports bike for years, so cam't comment
The Aprilia RSV4 is brilliant if you are tiny-absolutely loved the engine and the looks, it handled well over bad surfaces but was really uncomfortable after only 30 minutes as it was not suitable for my beer gut though, which was a real blow.
The BMW K1300 is deceptively quick and cover distances without a problem. It loses out in being a big thing to haul around in heavy traffic, and can't imagine it would be fun on a track.
And I don't suppose a Guzzi 1200 would suit, but a great bike all the same.
Wow...that's great, thank you! I looked at the K1300...it's too heavy for me, wouldn't be able to park it without a handy passing courier to help! I don't have a beer gut...yet! But do have a trip to the Dolomites & Nurburgring this year...but I guess I wasn't overly worried about comfort given I was taking the S1! I've done some tours of Europe on sportsbikes-a Fireblade and a CBR 600, which were no worse than on my V-Strom.
Rode down to Montenegro on my 1200 Guzzi Sport in 2014-the bikini fairing is so much better than full fairings on many other bikes-did 125 mph for miles on the autobahn. And a trackday at Cadwell, where it held its own amongst Fireblades in the Inter group.
Have a ride on an RSV4-with no beer gut you'd love it.
