The time has come, I am finally doing my big boys test in less than a month and other than 'oooh I'd love one of them' thoughts, I haven't actually had a serious think about what to get.

Budget is going to be around £1500-£1700 excluding insurance and everything (Gonna need to buy all new riding gear, I've lost loads of weight frown )

The bike will be used for sunny commutes, but mostly for fun as I drive now so don't have to use the bike for everything. As well as track days (Can I do them on an A2 licence? I've been itching to do one for years)

So far I am attracted to older 400's like the ZXR and the GSXR, I know they will probably be hard to find in non shagged condition but I love the looks of them, and they seem fast enough for what I want (On road, and want to do a few track days) and I can actually maintain things now without breaking them!

BUT

I would also love another Supermoto just because they can do everything a sports bike can and more and they are all I have ridden pretty much apart from my RS which was one of my favourite bikes.. but I also got into A LOT of trouble on my 125 SM's so would hate to think how much of a chav a proper SM would make me hehe

Or I could get an older R6 and 'restrict' it. I'd love to do that, and I'd trust myself to do that but depends on insurance.

As you can probably tell I am very confused, please throw suggestions at me.

Ahhh

Liam, best threads ever

Don't buy Prillia 125 - Buys 125
Don't buy scooter - Buys Scooter
Don't buy chinese bike - Buys Chinese bike.

In light of this, don't buy an r1
How'd I know you would make a comment like that hehe

So, an R1 it is then!

Thanks for the suggestions, I have considered an SV650 and quite like them but again, it depends on insurance and I need to look into the restriction rules some more.
I am leaning more towards a 400 though as I would like something to maintain over winter, and think it would be the next logical step from a 125. I don't like the look of any of the new 300's etc like the Ninja or R3. I'm very very undecided atm scratchchin

Thanks again for all the suggestions, a few bikes have been suggested that I didn't even think about.

Good man Busbeige! I intend on doing my das early next year when funds allow, an R6 would be a hell of a bike cool
Nicely done son, never thought you'd get on a bike! Hope you're well mate, will give you a shout on ye olde faceache soon, I'll come pay your posh ass a visit this summer tongue out

Now onto the bikes..

SV650 - I did look at these before, and I do really like them.. from what I have seen of them the riding position would be half way between a sports bike and an upright and I have no problems with either so it is a really worthwhile suggestion. That, and after what Hooli said, I had to have a little look on Youtube.. and if I can get one to sound like this, I am sold! cloud9

400's - Good arguements for and against getting one, but there is something about them that I can't help but love and I have had a VERY little go on a ZXR before and it was comfortable when I was bigger so will probably be more comfortable now I've gone from near enough 16 stone, to 12 stone biggrin and I am not worried about maintenance as I have a reliable car now so won't need to rely on the bike, and I am in no way scared of getting stuck in with fixing it or anything.

Versys/ER6 - Not in budget yet, and they seem more like commuter bikes to me, which is not what I want.. I have a boring diesel for that hehe

Hornets/Bandits - Would love one as they can look really smart if modified nicely, but am wary of all the comments on here calling them boring, and I don't want a bike to be boring once I've got used to it..

Supermoto's - All good suggestions on this front, and I do really like the look of CCM's but as was mentioned, I would like to go a bit further a field than London to meet people from here etc. as not many people I know are going on to big bikes, so will sort of rely on myself dragging myself around the country to get to rideouts/trackdays with you lot! Which is another reason I sort of want a more sporty bike, I can already tell I am going to be addicted to trackdays and a supermoto can do them, but I want to be able to get to places comfortably without neck muscles the size of small boulders!

A few bikes I have found which haven't been mentioned yet, thoughts?

Forgot about this thread hehe

In the past week or so, I have viewed a ZXR 400, an FZR600, a CBR600F and a CBR400 that my mate has, and I still haven't come to a decision!

Have my theory test booked for a few days time too, then I'll be doing a two day course for the licence and I can't wait any longer bounce

Good Luck!
Cheers.

2 day course after that, so will hopefully have my licence by the end of the month.
