Morning.

I have a Ducati Monster, 1200. The rear tyre is wearing fast (2500 miles and it won't last much longer tread depth wise) but I've also got wear around the centre 1/3 where the edges of the tread appear to have degraded badly - it's as if someone has gone round the tyre picking the rubber off each side.

It's not the wear you see on the edge of the tyre on a track day, but like the tread edges have been pinched off, like an eraser on the end of a pencil that's been pulled apart (sorry for the terrible examples).

Pressures are correct and it's a Pirelli Diablo Rossi II.

It's this caused by heat or a tyre that isn't up to a lot of torque (doubt it, sure they fit them to more powerful bikes).

Finally, front tyre is fine, suggestions for different tyres and - stupid question - would you suggest matching front and back?

I'm running 34psi from memory.

I haven't altered the rear suspension, so may well be an issue. Certainly haven't seen tyre wear like this before on previous tyres.

Will get a picture tonight just to confirm.

I've read online that the Rosso II wears quick, but I was a little surprised, as the bike was new when I got it so those miles include running in.

My current Rosso III has done various 1000 mile per month riding, a 2000 mile Euro tour and two trackdays and still has some life in it. I don't hang about as a rule.

In comparison the II it replaced did about 2500 miles (2.5 months). The III is better in all conditions, sticks like the proverbial to a shovel and is fantastic in the wet. You know what to do.

That's a Brutale 800RR.

It's worth noting something like a PR4 has such a slow rate of turn on a bike like this that it'll last forever but spoil the ride.
Love the 800RR, was between this and the Ducati.

I will get pictures up - haven't had the chance yet. At least it now seems that I'm not the only one suffering from fast wear which is good to know. Hopefully the wear will indicate if my suspension is indeed a little off.

Sounds like the III is worth a go - I've had PR3 before on another bike and did like them, but I have loved the II's grip (in the dry), Just not interested in using up 2 tyres a summer.

I've not struggled with Rosso 2s in the bucketing rain, fastest wet run of my life was on fresh Rosso 2s in the highlands a few years back. Similarly I've never experienced any noticeable difference in turn in either PR3s or PR4s, in fact I have them for the budget track bike I'm starting work on.

I'm quite happy to discuss that we may not like them because of our personal use, but I'm not convinced any of us have exceeded the potential of these premium tyres, wet or not.
100% agree - whilst I am concerned about the type of wear (never seen it before - pictures on the way) I will be the first to admit I will never get near, let alone to the limit of a bike or its tyres. Not to say I don't appreciate a premium tyre :-)

Also, I don't plan on riding this bike in the rain, too much work to clean a naked.

PR3's have always lasted me a long time and never had issues in lacking grip as I ride on the road - makes me think any premium tyre that doesn't have this sort of wear rate would suit me.
