Can someone give me a bit of advice please?

Is it seats from a specific mark of MX5 that are needed to fit in a Chim or will they all fit? Do they line up with the original holes or do they need modifying?

Cheers

Phil

My seats are pretty fooked (which is not good when you have a knackered back) and I'm trying to decide between replacing them completely or getting a cheap set of scabby MX5 seats to use in the old girl while I get the originals rebuilt... biggrin

Bolting bits of MX5 onto a TVR?????? I know TVR's were a bit of a parts bin special but pulleeeze. It'll be cup holders from a Clio next.
I'd be happy as a pig in poop if I could get a decent cup holder fixed somewhere in reach of the drivers seat! I've actually considered removing the stereo to fit one there...

mine were dead easy to fit. The speakers in the headrests is probably the best improvment, I know normally you don't need any music on, but being able to hear it clearly right behind your head is VERY nice on long drives.
unbolt original runners (4 x 13mm heads) then the front two holes line up with the mx5 seats, you need to drill two new rear holes and then bolt to the mx5 seats. Then just put back in the car, with spacers/risers if needed, but they are slightly higher than standard anyway.
That's the information that I was looking for ... Do you know the differences physically between the Mk 1, Mk 2, Mk 2.5 and Mk 3 seats? Is there anywhere that you can recommend to get leather seats that won't rush me for £500? :-)

I was thinking of getting fabric seats and then a set of £200 leather covers...

I'll be fitting MX5 seats this winter (inspired by your thread) and have just begun stripping them down for repair and re-colouring using Furniture Clinic products.
Did you wire in the headrest speakers to the rear speaker output from the head unit?
Can you recolour a darker seat to be a lighter colour? Ideally I could do to get my seats in a dark blue but the options seem to be black or beige / cream / tan with black being most common ... Not sure whether black would look out of place in a blue interior.

im sure i found a chap on ebay selling mx5 leather covers for 250 or so.... no idea how good....
Yeah - there's a couple of eBay sellers doing replacement leather covers for about £200...

They probably won't be hard to fit either...

If they are the same covers I looked at, they are "leather effect" and I've read on MX-5 forums that neither the fit nor quality are very good.
I was thinking something like this or this.

I was thinking that their "cream" would be a better base colour to start with than black if I was going to dye the seats a dark blue to match my interior but you seem to think that wouldn't be an issue ... in fact I'm wondering whether the black would look too out of place in a complete dark blue interior...

More great info ... I did kinda like the look of the Mk3 seats and they appeared to have the thinnest seat bases but I haven't actually seen any to check.

Yeah - had seen that on a few forum threads. *IDEALLY* I'd like to try to avoid modifying them if possible... biggrin

Awesome - I feel less abnormal now...! hehe

Of course - not sure I can now afford seats after the best part of £1,400 of work over the last week. biggrin

(Outrigger is bloody lovely though!)

The two of you getting out of Phil's Chimaera at the same time paints a picture......and in there......the only ground-effects Chim in the south of England
I have been told that watching me getting out of mine with the roof on is like watching an elephant giving birth...

Got stopped one day for not wearing a seatbelt and when I opened the car door the copper just looked and said "Well you aren't going to move far in there in a smash are you?" hehe

dont pay more than £150 for leather ones (and have seen decent ones for a lot less)
Have to say I've been looking and the only leather seats that I can find around that sort of price are completely fooked and would need recovering... frown

BountyHunter said:
oh and ive seen some people suggest to buy cloth and fit new leather covers. imo this simply isnt cost effective
I was tempted to do this as then I could buy some fabric seats cheaply, check that I was happy with them and that they were comfortable and fitted properly and *THEN* get a set of leather covers for about £200 and cover them...

brett84 said:
yeah i paid about 90 for the pair, but then needed to colour them so another £60 I think?
Plus about £40 for the new speakers for the headrest, I would definately get the model with these, it makes so much difference.
...again, no idea where you're seeing them at that kind of price as it seems that certainly on "the bay" that a set of leather seats in the sort of condition that you'd want are going for about £350 - £450 ... there's a set of MK3 seats over in Melksham that are going for £275 but they have the "icon" branding embossed in the headrests as they were in an "icon" edition MX5. frown
