Hello all, Great forum, congrats to all.
I've waded through the first 200 posts here only approx 1400 hundred to go...
I'm the Proud owner(24 hours)of a 1999 model sold to me as an 275BHP update model.. (HC?). Drove it all day yesterday on roads north of Sydney. It goes like the clappers.
I'm smitten.
Encountered a slight problem, it's idling rough and shunting.
Having searched this forum, appears it may have a dud Water temp sensor so want to start there with the process of elimination.
I've found the part LUCAS SNB802 on EBAY UK, being impatient was hoping an Australian member might be able to point me in the direction of a local supplier?

Welcome Rob! Congrats on a top choice of car, with all that home grown V8 stuff about.

When you say "idling rough", do you mean hunting up and down the revs range around idle, or just a lumpy sounding idle? The former could be a problem, they all do the latter around 900 rpm. You can probably find some video on You Tube, if not yell and we will post some for you

Get a mate to video from inside and out and post a clip if you want soe remote diagnosis.

Finally, there's a rule on PH, which we can forgive you for not knowing:

YOU MUST POST PICS OF ANY NEWLY ACQUIRED CAR

Thanks Qbee.
I Haven't got around to taking any pics yet.
Here's a couple the sellers advert which will hopefully postpone my stoning until I can post some of my own.
I owned a few HSV's in the past 25 years, I think they're Vauxhalls in the UK.
I'd call it hunting, on start up it stalls several times before settling around 1200rpm. Once warm, it idles around 1000 rpm but then jumps up to 1600, back 800, then repeat in erratic sequence then stalls. It also shunts a lot at low speed. Drove it to a spares shop this PM to order the sensor. On the way back developed rhythmic "clacking" noise like when something is clipping the fan or bearing going in a pulley, opened the bonnet and to my ear sounds more metallic and like it's coming from around the top right hand side of the engine/ancillaries.
Thanks for the advice hadn't though of You tube or posting it here. I'll learn!

Welcome rob, what a car you have bought and as said well done for ignoring the usual holdens.... Although the monaro a mate has is pretty good...

Don't have a Chim anymore opted this time for a Tuscan, and although I'm loving it and the speed 6, I do miss that V8... With regards to the problem, could also be stepper, easy to whip out and clean with carb cleaner and wd40 just be careful not to over tighten out it back in and a wrap of ptfe tape on the thread would help
Hi Milky, I've had HSV'S going back to 1990 and commodores prior, had several Senators of various grunt since. I've kept a 2000 model which I can't part with. A mate has a 2002 GTO in dark green with a remus exhaust, sounds nearly as good as a TVR! I've admired TVR's for many years but they're few and far between here.
Sorry not sure what or where a stepper is?

I had a cheap, copy Land Rover stepper motor fitted to mine which gave idle speeds all over the place when cold. If your idle is fine when the engine is warm, then you may have a cheaper stepper motor that doesn't respond quickly enough to the ECU. Not sure you can tell by just looking at them.
I searched here and found pics of the process for cleaning the stepper, the one in the article looked a lot beefier than the one fitted in mine. The idle is erratic regardless of temp.

OP, great looking car mate..... can't be too many others in your neck of the woods....

I think it was here, in an old post some one said there's about 50 TVR'S total in the country. Don't know how true it is. Tonight I took the better half for a spin to the local shopping centre, was surrounded by the shopping trolley guys who had no idea what it was. Funny thing, I passed another green one a few K's from where I live about 3 weeks ago. Other than I haven't seen one in the flesh in years.

If your car is a long term keeper and you have it converted to Megasquirt, Emerald or similar, this will entirely cure the problem as well as bringing you well into the 21st century.
It's a keeper for sure, I've had HSV's mapped so further down the track I'll get this one sorted too.

Welcome to the fold! Nice car, it looks like a 95/96 model, maybe registered in 99?
Thanks.
Nope it's a much sought after coveted, Malaysian Royal factory 1999 model... (would put smiley face here but haven't worked out how to do it yet) from what I've read from here and elsewhere the Malaysian version (under 50 made) used new and old gear not in sync with UK spec cars.

Rob, top edge of the box into which you are typing says "Formatting help", "Smilies",Rules of posting", "Upload an image (beta)"

Having left your cursor where you want the smiley, click on "Smilies" and a new window opens
Scroll down to the smiley you want, click on the image, and it will insert the smiley where you left your cursor.

Images - if you want to upload a photo, leave your cursor where you want it, click on "Upload an image (beta)" and a new window opens.
Select the image you want on your computer , then click "upload" and it will upload. It will fail if the file size is over 2Mb.
If you want to upload a second image, close the Uploading window, re-open it and go through the same process again.

Formatting help shows you how to make text bold. italic or whatever

Apart from the wheels the car looks identical to mine and mine is also sold as a '99. I think all the Japan/Australian and New Zealand cars would have come from Malaysia wouldn't they? Won't the chassis number give the year for sure?

Can't see from the photos, oil cooler fitted?
Build plate says 99. It has a number of holes where something was fitted in the lower intake on the inner lip far side.

The new water temp sensor is fitted, it has cured my idle problems 90% of the time. Steady idle at 8-900 rpm. The other 10% of the time rough idle 400-1600 revs, occasional stall it seems to be totally random, sometimes I've noticed it when the thermo fans kick in.
