Well guys - I think the old girl *MAY* finally have won ... phonecall from the very nice guys at Lloyds today that struck fear into my heart...

"Sorry Phil - she's got two slipped liners - It's going to be engine out and a rebuild ... "

So - do I cane the last of my savings and hope that she won't break again? No - I think I'm going to have to take her off the road for a bit.

A workmate is selling a quite nice (?) '06 plate Megane (for not that much over shed money) which has been well looked after so I think I'll get that for now and try to find somewhere I can store the Tiv till I can decide what to do with the powerplant. Arse!

It's the rear two offside cylinders that have had the liners slip so no - unlikely to be anything to do with the fueling issue I had.

A mate has suggested getting it over to his and pulling the block and doing it there but I just won't have the cash to do it until May ... I really don't want to sell her (plus she'll be worthless as she is) but I just don't have anywhere handy to work on the bugger where I am here... frown

Yeah - heads have been off ... Definitely cream crackered!

Thanks for the offer Peter - very kind - but I'll see what I can work out with the lads at Lloyds ... Hopefully I may be able to do something in May! (Fingers crossed.)

I have actually been thinking about buying another RX-8 because I did enjoy my old one ... however to tide me over I'm getting an '06 plate 1.6 Renault Megane... frown

They are worth about 10p now .. just looking through autotrader last night and you can get a 06 for £1500.

They must all need engine rebuilds.
Not so sure about that - just thirst (mine averaged 17mpg over 76,000 miles) and high tax bracket ('06's are £500 per year ish) ...

I've secured some - erm - 'funding' for May ... not really happy about it but it is the way that it is.

Lloyds gave me a cost of £3.5k to pull the old engine apart, have the block sent away and top hat liners fitted, have it rebuilt, heads refurbed on the way (they need the oil seals replaced at least as she smokes quite badly under load) and all refitted ... also to their credit they also gave me another alternative which comes out about a grand cheaper but not really to my liking.

I *COULD* (just) have got them to do the rebuild but it would have completely wiped out what's left of my savings and I'm not prepared to leave myself without some sort of contingency - so the plan for now is to get her back home (obviously they don't want a car just sat there waiting for four months) and stored off road (tax is due this month), try to brew up a sensible list of things to do while she's having major surgery and run around in a Renault Megane for now. (After using the old girl pretty much every day for five years this is going to be one hell of a change!)

I think that then I'll look at trying to source a 4.6 (up from 4.0) short block from V8D (or similar) in May - their 'performance' 4.6 short block is about £2,200 and my cam is almost new so throw that in, whack on my existing heads and use that ... I could go for their long block version of that with standard heads but mine (they're dual valve-spring 'HC' heads) appear to have been heavily (although clumsily) ported but with standard valves (obviously we've been able to check now) so are probably still worth using.

At the same time I still have a new gearbox and starter motor and a secondhand dif to fit so I suppose it would be sensible to do those at the same time then I have effectively a new drivetrain ...

Cheers Chilli!

My own gut (and you know that's a big gut) won't let me do a half arsed job on it though so I have feelers out with a few of the usual rebuilders to see what can be had for not-too-silly money.

She arrived home last night on the back of a loader looking very sad ... Lloyds have been great as usual - didn't even charge me for their time and simply asked that when I'm in the position to do the work I keep them in mind.

Just got to put plans together now as to what to do and where...

Went for £2,200 in the end ...

I've been offered a never-used rebuilt 5.0 bottom end for £2k and £800 to rebuild it with my existing heads / cam etc and refit it so thinking seriously about that ...
