Ok, thanks... having just fitted a new steering pump and refilled/bled etc, and still having a bloody infuriating ZizzzZzing noise (just like a failing steering pump in fact), looks like the watter pump will be next

It would need to be a pretty good ventriloquist as it's in a box of discarded crap in the workshop and not on the engine (JE alt bracket = idler delete)

Simon is quite right of course, I made the mistake of assuming it was the PAS pump as the noise was changing with steering inputs and seemed to be coming from that direction... I'll stethoscope it in a minute and I might even take the belt off too. Doh!

Maybe a tad quieter after running a while and lots of steering jiggling. Hopefully it'll settle down
