Stopped because I noticed the water temperature at zero.

Expansion bottle is full, but I don't have tools to undo the nut on top of the swirl pot. Daren't carry on in case it has lost coolant, although there's no evidence of a leak.

RAC on their way, but in the meantime can someone tell me which fuse the dashboard water temperature gauge is on?

Ta!

Wires still look attached at the sensor end, and I've wiggled them with no response. Maybe the sensor has failed.

Just realised I've been looking at the ECU sensor. Can't see the gauge sensor; it's too dark down there. So it could be that - the RAC guy will have a torch.

There's no evidence of water loss so I'm 80% sure it's the sensor or gauge, just want the RAC guy to help eliminate the other 20% of doubt. I'll really kick myself if I overheat it and warp the heads.

The RAC guy had a torch, and after I'd directed him to where the gauge sender is we could see that the connector had indeed fallen off. The plastic looks a bit knackered so it could do with replacing. Distributor cap off to gain access, and a bit of fiddling with bent-nose pliers, and the gauge came to life.

Thanks for everyone's help!

At least we were stopped in the shade, and the locals were friendly...
