Was always going to be a few unforeseen gremlins during the rebuild.. I have seized up front & rear calipers, does anyone know where to get them sorted out & repainted while im at it. I contacted 'biggred' in Worcester they quoted £243 for overhaul & painting in red. Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere else that do them? (save me a few pennies wink)

Also considering 888 sierra cosworth calipers for the front brake upgrade with 278mm discs, anyone else running these if so how do you find them? Im limited to what i can use as im keeping the oz vegas on my chim, front are 15"

cheers
Steve

Cheers Pete, will give them a call

Mike, oh I didn't know you had them on your 'S'. I have the 240mm yeah but graham said the calipers will be different to the ones I had off you before (for my S with the 260mm discs on)

I have the 887/888 brakes on my Chimaera 450 thumbup

As above they are a little over the top for day to day road use but given they are significantly more effective than the originals I'll stick with them smile

On the track they are excellent and stop quickly from high speed all day without fading.

Overall if you can find a set buy them, add braided hoses and decent pads and they are worth every penny.
I have the braided hoses already, got them from act just wondering if they'll need changing to work with these 888 calipers or not (if I go with them)

laugh wallets been well & truely emptied on engine bay & various parts

Cheers Phil, they've actually came out really well! I'm half tempted to have a go now. Are those the original 'S' calipers or did you do the chimaera brake uograde on it?

Yes I bet....I imagine its very difficult to stop cleaning, changing and doing everything down to the last bolt on a body off yikes Mines going to happen at some point....I look at it and think yep...then I do the same the next week and so on biglaugh

Original on the S I didn't upgrade but they are the same as on my Chim I think being the 400....I refurbed the whole braking system though including the (Cortina Servo...not many of the S's have these, Glenrobbo does/did from memory I think) and master cylinder. So after all that it stopped great....although ianything would have felt great from where it started smile

Its elbow grease really and time between coats. I replaced the bleed nipples and used my compressor with the air nossel wrapped in ptfe to poke in the bleed hole to pop out the pistons. Just be careful which way you fit the seal on the new cylinders when re-fitting...they only seemed to like one way round. Although your calipers may be different if on a larger engine.

I'd have a go especially if you're trying to save where you can, I'm sure mine cost me about £65 all in.
Think ill give it ago, i had them painted before by someone but when i received them they were still 'tacky' found bits of paint sticking, must take awhile to cure unless there ovencured?

Mike, i think he said that the mk2 & mk3 tvr chimaera calipers were different to the mk1? I presume they were all the same (ford sierra) just different size discs?

Thats a good point Steve actually, I used a primer and then...... (you'd think I'd learn my lesson by now) halfrauds caliper paint and it was awful getting it to dry...very tacky still after 48 hours indoors. Stuck it in the oven on high for a couple of hours in the end and it did help I think (don't tell my wife) but I'd go for high temp engine paint or plastikote high temp if I did again. Some people I know have used hammerite on calipers with seemingly good results although I've not tried myself.

Hows the rest coming along....got any more photos?

eek halfrauds caliper paint.. I recon the guy that done mine (£40) must of used the same because they took a further week or two to completely cure, i remember looking at my audi car mat after i got them home & saw bits of green paint!
Still, look a treat behind the ol oz 8 spokes on the 'S'

I haven't got any more pictures sent through yet Phil, the chassis was picked up & dropped off for shotblasting etc on the friday. Ill have a few snaps this week, still got these oz vega split rims to sort out too rolleyes

The aim was for the caliper to stand out so 'kawasaki green' it was to match the silicone hoses under the bonnet, think i achieved this laugh shocking anyones eyeballs as the bonnet flips forward. Yeah im biased but i do agree the oz 8 spokes look the business on the S's.

Hmm i had a look at some finished in black with the chrome outer lip but im not convinced.. Something close to the original i guess but im worried the polished outer rim will start pitting again once the laquer gets damaged (eventually). I think i may just go 'hyper silver' powdercoat all over?

Yes its a tricky one as polished or cut looks great when it is great! The lacquering is a bit of a double edge sword..eventually its going to go and it will look like crap...or you don't lacquer and spend the rest of your life waxing them yikes

One of my wheels was out a few mm too far so diamond cut was out the question and they didn't polish...so powder coat it was. Not that I regret it....as long as the rims suit the car, powder coat is a good choice all round I'd say. Black is a difficult one on certain colour cars...I'm not keen on dark on dark but on yellow for instance it looks really good. Accents of black can look ok though IMO.

Its the 4.3 you have isn't it? I nearly bought one in light blue before I bought my 400, I've heard good things about them...the BV especially.

Yes definitely will be about next year, I need to fire (sneak) the dates in the diary early so that my "Dad the taxi" or "husband the shopping carrier" duties can be excused once in a while smile
Well i think we can rule all black out on the oz vegas, just stumbled across these on the net.. Dreadful. The polished rim & black centre dont look too bad but i think im going to opt for the full powdercoat in 'hyper silver' this time for easy maintenance & they will appear 'metal looking' which will look pretty good (i hope rolleyes)

I have the 4.0 an early 93 one (pre-serp) it came up at just over 5k so naturally i was consumed by the darkside & embarked on an ebay bidding war! laugh will you be in the S or the chim then Phil? (presuming you still have the S?) Glen came down to wellesbourne breakfast meet up few weeks back you'll have to come down next time, we shall talk caliper porn wink
