XJR (X300 flavour)

Rust will be the main concern. Check all over the body especially the rear wheel arches, round the front and rear screens, and bottoms of the doors and wings.
A hard driven xjr will have shagged its brakes, tyres and suspension components but the engine and driveline should be good for 100k with reasonable maintainence.
Parts prices are not unreasonable. Insurance is usually cheaper than Ze Chermans too.
Essential to buy the very best example you can find. Have a look on carsandclassics, and the Jaguar World magazine classifieds. Joining the JEC might be a good move too
Thanks matey. Been looking at x300's for a while, but until today thought an "R" would be a no go! so familiar ish with the foibles of them in general. Guess it's just a case of looking even harder than usual, bearing in mind they are likely to have been driven harder!A hard driven xjr will have shagged its brakes, tyres and suspension components but the engine and driveline should be good for 100k with reasonable maintainence.

Are the brakes unique to the XJR or the same as the 4.0 cars? also same question re. shocks and general suspension bits. Also is the gearbox the 4 speed unit or the 5 speed switchable as per 4.0 cars?

The suspension on the XJR's is much harder. They don't give the magic carpet ride you expect of a Jaguar.
If you look on Jag Lovers you'll find copies of the brochures. Not sure whether the gearbox is the same as the 4L but it isn't the Mercedes unit that the SC V8 4.0's got.

Blue one has a few mods, good or bad? and no tax
Red one has a shorter MOT and a bit of drive away tax BUT less toys (relaly want the Harmon Kardon stereo)
Oh and both are miles away blue one is manchester and red is leicester. I'm in worcester
Price wise the guy selling the blue one, trade vs private for red, says he will sell it for 2k without tax.... Planning on seeing the red one before the auction ends.

Only up the road in B'ham... not sure I could live with the colour though!

I promised myself an XJR in 1994 or 5 after I came away from the NEC with a poster of one in that colour. Couldn't do it now - gotta be red, blue, silver or black for me.Only up the road in B'ham... not sure I could live with the colour though!

Don't bother - it's a complete heap. Went to see it last weekend and my first comment as we pulled up next to it was "Er, should we just go straight home?"Only up the road in B'ham... not sure I could live with the colour though!
One tyre was flat, rusty wheel arches and generally very sorry looking in the cold light of day.
Have to wonder with some "dealers" dont you
Its this kind of thing that puts me off driving long distances to see cars. For example the blue one above is 2.5 hours away while the red one is 1.5. The latter isn't too bad but the first, thats a day essentially!

The red one is nice, but not perfect. Manifold is blowing, there's some bubbling at the bottom of both arches where they meet the sills. Paintwork is a bit tired but could be brought back to life without an awful lot of work. It's nice, honest car though.Blue one has a few mods, good or bad? and no tax

I'm still umm-ing and ah-ing over whether to bid or not.
I was planning to go up but if you have.....could you share intel. PH'er/PH'er

Thanks for that! The colour was making me think twice anyway and looking at their stock my spidey sense was tingling!

Their 'lot' is a piece of fenced-off wasteland covered in hardcore and sorry looking cars at the end of their lives

See, therein lies a problem. I quite fancy it myself, but I'm going to see a few more before the auction ends and if none of them pan out I was going to throw an bid on and cross my fingers. While giving intel to a fellow PH'er is absolutely the right thing to do, giving intel to an ebay competitor is quite another!I was planning to go up but if you have.....could you share intel. There's not much more to tell really. It's a nice honest car that needs a bit of work. It's nice and clean underneath (at least compared to the other sheds I saw), wheels and tyres all good. I didn't get to drive it but got a 15 minute ride around the local B roads and there were no worrying noises.
The owner was adamant that they would not be accepting offers to end the auction early.
However, if I bid and you win it I will be most put out...
Nice fleet!
This will be my third cat! I had a rough 2.9 manual XJ40 at about 22 which I didn't keep long and then a few years later a STUNNING 4.0 Celebration XJS, the only car I regret selling
For me the X300 has to be either Sport trim or and XJR, call me vain but I like the black exterior trimming, dark wood and the sports seats. I'm 27 and not quite ready for the wood and chrome of a Sov'!
And since I found a favourable insurance quote the idea of a supercharger is really appealing! I'd still be very tempted by a 4.0 Sport though but no nice ones about

Just a quick question, as I don't want to create a whole topic for it, but I've seen a manual XJR for sale. This is the ultimate spec for me, and considering I'm 21, is somehow insurable for not too much. The catch is, it has 220k miles. Is buying an XJR with this many miles a terrible, terrible idea? It's just that you don't often hear of the standard ones going past 200k very often, let alone the supercharged one!
I think i've seen the same car, highest mileage X300 i've ever spotted! Out of interest who is your best insurance quote from? I'm young ish too (27) and would just be interested to know Gassing Station | Jaguar | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
