Car looks very good but why would I buy a portfolio over a regular 2007/2008 XJR?

The aluminium trim and the black with a hint of blue to it makes this look superb, so much better than silver and wood. I'll be looking to buy Monday subject to test drive assuming it checks out so any information at all between now and then would be gratefully received.

Thanks for the inout so far chaps, but i'm trying one in Reading tomorrow and if that's not super amazing which I doubt it will be at 3k over that portfolio, I'll be putting a deposit on the mayfair prestige one imminently.

So final call... anyone know that car? Anything in particular options or common faults I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance. Quite looking forward to a garage containing a GT2 parked next to an XJR. Hair on fire fast or still pretty fast but comfortable. That'll be a nice decision to have to make lol.

Also I'm liking the jag forum too.

look closely at all suspension Bushes, they can be Spendy to replace
Tyres also need a decent amount of tread with Even Wear.
make sure EPB functions correctly and Cruise control works correctly
they are linked if EPB fails Cruise goes with it.
brakes are not expensive, EBC red stuff are a great reasonable upgrade.
check all gauges are functioning correctly.
anything that will cost you ££ and annoy you if broken or non functioning.
hell I'd take a code reader with me to check for any stored Codes.
all the above can be good bargaining points.
keeping in mind suspension-tyres are a few £££
Thanks for the tips. Where's the OBDII port please?

Tyres look new and brakes seem alright but as you said I wouldn't expect them to cost loads red stuff sounds like to good tip thanks I was wondering how brakes were.

Are there any tuning options BTW probably sacrilege I know but if there are software upgrades perhaps to make the gearbox a bit more decisive/less ponderous or get more boost/torque it'd be worth knowing. Obviously I'll get used to it first.

How much oil do they tend to use over 10k interval and how big is the sump? what is the preferred oil please?

325 watts sound system??? crikey does that sound good?

£12K and (conveniently) 99K miles. They must be dreaming.
seriously? I know the mileage is convenient but this car is immaculate and a 2007 one owner, supplying dealer complete service history, and corroborated by me personally direct with the dealer's service records/department price wise in my ill informed opinion it seemed reasonable. But I really don't know,

So far I've seen a 2003 which looks odd but was immaculate and 11k, didn't drive amazingly well. A 2008 this afternoon at a main dealer which drove beautifully but because I'm a bit OCD wasn't the car for me due to some repair work I wasn't happy with and that was 15k!

I see some cheaper ones but they're usually older with more miles and the portfolio package to my eyes is just how the xjr should look.

But what's the right price for this car then? I'd hate to go with me heart instead of my head.

I wouldn't at that mileage TBH
the hose under the SC appears to go around 100k and that is a fugga of a job apparently.
Interesting, can anyone lay out their first hand experiences please. Mileage, car year and cost?

it'll be really useful for negotiation thanks.

According to the dealer who's serviced it from new that job hasn't been done. Of course the selling dealer would have to sort it if it happened within the warranty period.

As regards valuation, could you help me with some citations? I'm happy to tell the dealer it's 4k overpriced but I suspect he'll say it isn't and call me a chancer hehe

Obviously if you can point me to a 2007ish example one owner and full supplying history in like new condition ideally a Portfolio for 8k I'm ready to buy smile

Hi Glass's trade for this car mileage adjusted is £8060.00 retail £11890.00 based on it being in excellent condition so the price they are asking looks about right to me,great cars by the way I sold mine last year
Thanks for the information, really helpful. Still interested in saving 4k however if possible! I know on the porsche forums every car ever posted is 'vastly overpiced' but usually claimed by people trying to depress the market or people not even in the market.

Was yours a portfolio BTW? I'm interested in knowing if they had bluetooth music play as well as phone, also what else was standard. It seems feindishly difficult to get standard equipment list.

There is always another car out there somewhere, just a case of looking and waiting.
That's so very true and probably sensible.

But in my view mileage is such an easily modified metric, I'd almost prefer to see a probably genuine 100k piled on by one owner over 6 years of almost certainly motorway miles backed up with supplying dealer service history than some 3/4/5 owner, older car showing 60k miles. Especially if as in this case, the car is absolutely spotless throughout and hard to tell from a new one condition wise.

It's such a shame dealers have created this paranoia about miles. My Peugeot 2006 207 diseasel has 125k miles now -- every last one done by me and thrashed properly hard almost from day 1, but warmed up sympathetically and serviced with Mobil 1 at exactly every 12k miles without fail. Any dealer and anyone else will run away when I try and sell it because "it's about to blow up", however it's used daily and doesn't consume a drop of oil, it still sounds sweet as a nut and does the same 120.0mph it did right from the start. Brakes, tyres, everything taken care of when needed meaning it drives probably better than any other 2006 on the road regardless of mileage.

And if Peugeot can make a car like that when looked after properly, I'm sure Jaguar can...

Saying this, watch out for my "OMG I've bought a lemon" post in three weeks' time wink

SM
BTW if anyone is looking to buy GJ08SXX from Reading main dealer, please do get in touch. I looked at this and rejected it yesterday and am happy to share my thoughts on its condition / accident repair opinion.

If it's hard to tell from new and has 99,000 on the clock something doesn't add up. I have never seen a car with that mileage free from gravel rash and other wear and tear.

You seem to have convinced yourself that this car is for you so buy it and I wish you good luck.
It does seem odd for sure, but the low mileage 08 in Reading was covered in gravel rash and looked like it'd covered every one of its 80k miles twice. Perhaps this one has had a bonnet blown over I just don't know - maybe the clock has been wound forward lol.

Anyway drove the Portfolio today and it's a lovely drive and looks just sublime so it's likely I'll go ahead.

But genuinely though I'm really puzzled about the 4k overvaluation you identified -- if Glass's guide is listing 12k why is it valued at 8? I presume you're a dealer with some sort of insider knowledge? Can you maybe point me to an equivalent car for 8k?

Ah, so your 8k was trade price and your view is he should be selling it for 8k too with a warranty. I do appreciate your input but as with all things internet there's the whole spectrum of facts and opinion. Some of what you say has been useful at least thanks.

PS I wouldn't pay £8K for that car.
Ok, here's a challenge. Buy me an xjr portfolio with no bodywork repairs other than a bit of
Stonechip blow over, mechanicaly sound and with 50k miles and a proper main dealer history for 8k and I'll give you 1000 cash in 50s as commission.

I want the car before end of November.

Please share your buying genius with me.

Good offer
But
Don't rush and get one you later regret.
the price seems to high you will need to keep looking till another shows up.
the dealer will have a profit in that deal and cover any warranty he offers.
the mileage is high
I would wait and keep looking.
I'd hate to see threads saying your car has started to show problems soon after purchase.
My S type had 19k on the clock when I got it,
well worth the wait even if it was a bit overpriced.
Thanks for the measured advice it's appreciated. Things have progressed in an most unexpected way but I will be very surprised if by mid next week I do not have a mint portfolio on my driveway smile

I'll share the details as and when. Let me say there are some lovely people in the Jaguar scene.

You just have to wait sometimes, sometimes for ages and sometimes for not very long at all, but there's no need to pay an inflated price unless there are only a few cars in existence and they never come up for sale. The Portfolio is an interesting car but nothing to get carried away about.
Thing is it's 10kish for a (kinda) supercar powered luxury car, a chunk of cash but really not going to put off retirement by much and incredible value. Life is too short sometimes and rather than wringing my hands for months and months waiting for the "right" car (which I have no doubt will come along eventually), I'd prefer to go for the best compromise in the short term -- a few weeks -- and start enjoying the thing during this lifetime.

I don't think you're wrong but I'm happy that Friday week I'll be enjoying my immaculate XJR portfolio horsing about the motorways with the Iron Maiden playing and a smile on my face instead of hitting "refresh" constantly on autotrader.co.uk, looking glum.

Live for today smile

Sure thing, I'm getting it Friday so I'll post some shots over the weekend. I'm actually quite excited and will be sure to bring some Iron Maiden and AC/DC for the changer on the roadtrip I have planned smile Assuming a Jag CD player is compatible with such things...

Hi there sorry for the delay... First impressions are that it's super smooth and quiet and comfy. Quite quick too but not silly quick and surprisingly agile for its size. I really like it and am glad I went XJR -- for the money it's brilliant and makes a perfect garage mate next to the GT2. Not entirely sure how to get the most out of the auto yet but getting there.

Downside is the selling dealer didn't manage to get a couple of issues resolved he'd promised before collection so it's back at the main dealer now being fettled. I'll reserve the commentary on this until after the event but right now he seems to be reluctantly fulfilling his obligations.

Portfolio options I'm not in a position to compare since I've never owned any other XJR. I do know it has a tremendous cd player and the brushed aluminium looks a million dollars compared to the woodgrain. The body colour, aluminium bits on the wings plus contrasting leather makes it a fine looking thing to walk up to.

So all in all very pleased, just annoying that I'm typing from the train collecting the kids since I only have two seats in the other car. Never had to resort to the train in 7 years and 130k miles of Peugeot ownership lol.

Well just got the car back after the squealing belt was fixed (turned out the supercharger belt or tensioner or something, don't really know didn't see the bill)
And boy it's smoother and I'm sure faster too and a really great car to drive. Saturday I had to go 140 miles and felt sick and knackered so set the cruise at a leisurely 75 and wafted all the way in light traffic.

Who wants to guess my average mpg for that little stint?

Bang in the middle: 31. One of the criteria for this car choice was something that could at a push do 25mpg so this is better than expected.
