I have been considering getting new tyres for my XJ6, and have been doing some online shopping.

Given the new EU legislation, it is easy to compare different brands and types of tyre. My question is as follows: every post I can find about XJ6 tyres say do not buy budget tyres, but where the budget tyres are better than a premium tyre, why not?

By way of example, compare the price, fuel efficiency rating, decibel level and stopping distance in the wet between the next 3 links.

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/falken/ziex-...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/tristar/spor...

The third link seems to offer the same things for a significantly lower price, so why not?

I'm sure there is a good reason, but I can't work it out!

Sorry for a late thread resurrection: thank you everyone for your input!

3 votes for Kumho: can anyone give me a link to a website selling them at a reasonable price? I looked on Oponeo and can't tell the difference between the £56 and the £69 ones, o any of the ones in between!

Many thanks in advance

As much as I like the sound of a main dealer etc. the cost is just too much for me to justify.

I am thinking of plumping forthese Kumhos, can someone please advise as to whether I have done the right thing? Seems right to me: http://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-details/kumho-kh31-22...

The KH 31 has been around for a long time, and I'm not sure - better check yourself - that the load rating of the ones you've chosen is right for an XJ either.

You'll need to add fitting charges to that price. Personally I'd avoid buying tyres mail order and getting a third party to fit them as you'll enter a whole world of pain if you're not happy. Returning unsatisfactory mail order tyres is practically impossible as I've found out to my cost. I'd get online quotes and then see if a local tyre co can get close to the price. That might may well work out a bit more expensive but you'll have the opportunity to check the manufacturing dates on the actual tyres to be fitted before any money changes hands and most importantly there's only one person or firm carrying total responsibility for whats been supplied and fitted so theres no opportunity for playing the blame game if anything is wrong.
Sound advice as ever JagSteve, I'll report back when I have new tyres smile

So... I bought my tyres.

Kumho KU31 XL tyres, and they work so, so well. The ride is unbelievable, handles like a dream... I can't quite believe the difference the new tyres have made.

Thanks for update OP.

Not got round to sorting mine yet but NSR slow puncture & your feedback has confirmed my thoughts. Thank you.

Just out of interest, which model do you have? Mine is a 95 Sovereign 3.2 (56k miles!)
97 Sport 3.2 manual, with 139k. Going in for a service today (at vast expense!), hopefully will get even better once everything is done
