2005 Golf 1.6 FSI - Coolant Leak / Usage

I wonder if anyone can help.
My misses bought a Golf 1.6 FSI on a 55 plate about 4 years ago. Maybe twice a year it has needed topping up ever so slightly with coolant, which i wasnt overly concerned with.
More recently however it has been losing / using it at quite a rate. So much so that the light came on the other day and it was a good inch below the minimum marker.
Has anybody had a similar experience, if so what did it turn out to be? Leaky rad maybe? Leaky thermostat housing? I cant see any dampness.
Any help is much appreciated.
(On a slightly happier note, i have just acquired a 2001 A4 Avant 1.8 5V B5. 75k on the clock, in Santorin Pearl Blue.)
