Smoke from diesels?

Is some smoke from a diesel normal? I asked a seller if there was any smoke from the exhaust and he said just the usual puff when you put your foot down around town. Is that normal?

The car is a MK5 Golf 2.0 GT TDI (2005). I thought some smoke was normal. What colour should it be?
