EML light has come on the dash at 74k miles, and, whilst having the service done, the dealer has advised that I need both intake manifolds replacing due to 'excessive play' on the flap linkage (or something like that), being about £1400.

I understand this is a common issue on this engine and with reading on here and elsewhere, I have read of a few different solutions:

Purchase a flap repair kit from Ebay and repair / clean existing manifolds (by myself or at a garage)
Buy a remap and get the EML parameters re-set

I can wield a spanner, but would baulk at anything involving dismantling major parts of the engine, so would ideally prefer a garage to sort it out, but don't want to spend £1400!

I am looking to change the car soon anyway, so need it fixing to be able to sell/trade in.

What is the recommended solution?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

My employer fixes both banks for £300 all in.

Two hours labour for one side and one for the other. We do dozens of them, usually off the back of a main dealer scaring the s*** out of the owners with the ~£1500 quote.
Thanks Dr G, exactly the sort of response I was looking for! If I can't find a friendly local specialist who can do this, I may need to book a trip to Bucks.....

phew , that's a relief smile what other common faults do these have ?
Apart from this, mine has been very reliable for 3 years and 50k miles (now 6 years old and 75k miles)
