Fabia gearbox problems

I have a 57 reg fabia 1.2 3 cylinder, done about 70k miles.
been having weird noises so took to local Skoda dealer and they reckon it needs a new gearbox and quoting £2500 for new one inc fitting. They have nothing to do with recon' parts but will fit a recon gearbox if I source one.
spoke to Skoda uk but don't think they will help on a 7 year old car.
would be grateful for any advice, is fitting a recon' gearbox a bad idea? or anyone recommend anyone (we are in Surrey) or give an idea of price.
