My father in law has been pestered by his local dealerhsip regards servicing his Touareg.

The car was registered by the dealer in sept 13, held in their compound until jan 14 when my father in law purchased it.

The car has 3k miles on it and the service indicator on the car says it has 176 days left till an inspection service.

The dealer has emailed, phoned and posted numerous prompts in the past few weeks telling him it needs serviced. During a couple of phone calls they have said if he doesn't have it serviced "it will invalidate his warranty".

My thoughts are the car was obviously not PDI'd in sept 13 but jan 14, this is when the clock started ticking hence it's not due according to the car.

Where does he stand ?

My thoughts are wait till it's due a serviced as per the car, I see no risk to warrnaty here ? How was he to know it has sat in a compund for 4 months prior to the PDI ? How long do cars sit in compounds in general, no doubt weeks/ months ?

I think the uncertain thing is that the car was registered, and then sat in the compound (rather than being registered later).

With some cars (not sure about VW, but I think it's pretty standard) the service indicator doesn't start to countdown until the car has done some mileage (100/250), so that makes sense in this car's case.

Is the car on variable servicing, or fixed time/mileage? I'd expect it to be variable, in which case the garage should have no idea whether it needs servicing or not.

I'd be minded to ask VW UK by email, perhaps not mentioning the cars history and just say the car was bought in Jan and is showing 176 days. At least you'll have something in writing then, but if VW say it should be servicing then you'll be a bit stuffed - VW aren't known for flexibility in warranty disputes.
It's variable service, the only record they have is when it was registered hence the 12 month service spiel.

It can go to 2yrs on variable - odd, but not surprising as everything to do with VW servicing seems to be a scam, that the dealer is chasing this.

Although if the car has only done 3K (what sort of journeys?) then arguably it should be on fixed interval servicing.
Noted on the fixed service I was aware of this, 1st year he's had it and unsure how often he would use it although going by this looks like the variable service is going to take him till feb next year anyway (just over 12 months of ownership). the car is generally used for longer journeys, he's aware fo the DPF issues with short trips around town so stays out of the touareg for these.

Clarity from VW customer services is he's correct the car dictates when it needs serviced not some call centre numpty looking for a sale.
