Who is liking their new Golf R?
Discussion
Given there are a few of you on here that have ordered one, would like to hear your thoughts..?
Mine is nearly a week old and had moments of uncertainty when I ordered it initially, as never owned a Golf before, however it has totally surprised me. As an overall package for doing various tasks seems perfect blend.
All of those positive write ups and video's coming from the media seem to be justified. I don't think I would have looked at the R, if it was not for those lease deals, but glad it did.
The R sort of reminds me of a mini RS4..apart from the auto-box of course.
So what are your first or even longer term impressions?

Gave the car its first good blast at the weekend over some back roads. It's devastatingly quick and highly addictive.
Still stick by the understeer comment - if you gun it out corners, it feels like it'll never lose grip but anything less than full throttle with turbo on song does result in a bit of nose heaviness.
Ride is very firm and makes life for any passenger less than comfortable - the types of road around me do need something with some more spring travel but heyho no car can do everything.
Fuel economy is fairly stable - 33-35mpg just cruising about, 24mpg when gunning it.
Your comments about the ride being very firm. Is yours running 18's or 19's? Running 18s. It's comfortable, it's more the road types I drive on. Very bumpy/undulating - without long travel, you fairly get flung about. Just a downside to stiff suspension, it's great on better laid roads.
I see - I have the Cadiz 18" wheels and thought I had made a mistake not ordering the bigger 19" Prets, however I quite like them, think they suit the black paintwork and don't look too small.G
I am also averaging 23MPG, however mostly school runs at the moment, long drive to Herefordshire saw around 29MPG, still has around 1300 miles on it at the moment, so probably still tight..
I did hate the car momentarily when I could not find the postcode selection button on the Sat Nav, but got over that. Is there a way to move the mode from normal to race, by using the steering wheel?

Don't want to turn this thread into Golf R vs... that has been done to death thanks! this is about how people are getting on with their R's
Has anyone been tempted by these new wave of remaps/piggybacks etc? Given the standard power, not sure the chassis or brakes could cope with too much more without getting yourself into some bother...
Thanks

presumably the DSG has a relatively restrictive max torque limit for those interested in modding, or am i misunderstanding?
Not sure it would be. I am sure I read that the new R400 (if they make it) will have the same DSG box as the R. I notice that the tuning companies are also looking to develop a remap for the DSG, to make it shift quicker and be more responsive. For now, I am happy with performance. Also as it is a lease car, probably won't go down this route.I would however consider a R400 in two years time, if it ever gets into production - 400hp in a Golf is insane!

Hi all,
Got around 2,000 on her now, however starting to get an annoying buzzing/vibration from the dash area. Seems comes on when in race mode and certainly quite pronounced when I accelerate. I reckon it is the sound actuator thingy.. It happens intermittently..
Anyone else having this rather annoying problem?
Thanks G

Does anybody here regret getting a manual instead of a DSG gearbox? And/or does anybody with the DSG regret not getting a manual?
I have just ordered myself a 5 door manual (cracking lease deal) as I imagine it will be a little more engaging. However, when I'm sat in traffic before and after work everyday for an hour, I start to doubt whether I should change my order to a DSG.
Very split decision and as I'll be stuck driving the thing for 2 years, I need some owners opinions on the matter
Thanks
I purchased the DSG variant as just did not like the manual. From the feel of the clutch, to the way the gears went in. However at the time I was driving a Cayman with a manual short shift box, which was very precise. I have no regrets, except the paddles need to be much bigger!I have just ordered myself a 5 door manual (cracking lease deal) as I imagine it will be a little more engaging.
