audi quattro ur turbo MB starting issues

I have a 1988 audi quattro ur turbo MB and it is turning over but not starting. It does start eventually but I fear soon it won't start at all. I may have run it fairly low on fuel recently. I thought it was empty and that's why it wasn't starting but on filling it the issue is still there.
Does anyone have advice on some simple checks/problem solving.

The quattro hasn't moved for a few days now but the same evening that it took an absolute age to start in the morning(it's garaged so not a cold weather thing)it started instantly.
I am guessing this may point to something related to it sitting for a period of time.(it tends to only move once a week max).
Maybe it just needs a good long run or that may be my lack of car knowledge speaking.
I haven't had a chance to look into the suggestions yet but should get to it over the weekend.
