Golf Mk4 1.6 alarm/central locking issues

Evening all,
Family member has a 2003 1.6 Match with an odd fault, any thoughts please;
On unlocking the car, opening the door & getting in unless you start the car within 15-20 seconds the door often re-locks and the alarm goes off. Having known the car for 10 years and having had a MK5 myself I thought the car would only re-lock if you unlocked but didn't open the door?
All the internal lights including the boot one appear to be functioning correctly. Any thoughts please?
