Morning people. I have an e91 LCI 320d BMW Touring and due to very low mileage am looking to switch back to petrol. Started looking at A4 Avant for about £11k. What should I be looking for? S Line is a given but what else? I guess I'm looking at around a 58 plate which is what I have, so was this a facelift year? I also would want Quattro if making the switch to an Audi.
Any advice welcome!

Why do you need to go quatro, be mindful of the fact they carry quite a weight penalty because of the quatro running gear.
I ran the diesel version from new in 07 till 2010, excellent car, reassuring grip levels and once chipped it would cruise at 100mph (autobarhns of course)
It would return 47mpg! Going back to grip, it was also very good in snow, which is my reason for asking why quatro.Overall a very well screwed together car, interior panels have nice gapping/fit with no rattles, seats are comfortable (LeMans -Calais in one hit on one occasion-speed cameras were all facing north!) As a workhorse with the rear seats folded down its quite surprising how much they hold.I sold it to a ph member who I think still has the car so I assume he is happy with it as much as myself.
2008 did have some changes-for the better, as you would expect.
Quattro purely for additional grip. With winters becoming more often snowy, with a car full of wife and kids I'd feel happier with 4WD stability.

Is the 2.0T a good option? I'd look at remapping it, as have done with my 320d. How do the petrol turbos pull? Anything to be aware of in terms of engines, and year of car etc? When was the facelift and what changed?

Disclaimer : I drive a '09 2.0 A4 Avant TFSI Quattro, B8 version. Not modded.

I expect your budget would stretch to a B8, which has a much more space inside compared to the B7.

Generally, it's a great engine, lots of torque, but still enjoys revs. I think Quattro is a must, particularly if you want to chip it.

The only major concern on the 20.TFSI engine in the B8 is the oil consumption problems. Various different factors, but potentially require an engine rebuild with new pistons/rings, even on lowish mileage examples. Consumption an be as much as a litre of oil per tank of fuel, apparently! Audi apparently will offer significant goodwill contributions on cars with main dealer service history, but I wouldn't count on that. Ideally find a car that's had it sorted already smile

Spec-wise, look for leather and tech pack (satnav/bleutooth/audi music interface). The satnav isn't 'full postcode' buy amazingly they didn't fix that until the 2012 facelift...

Not sure why you think "s-line is a given"?
Yes, just been looking at a B8 09 with 76k on the clock. Has had a cambelt warranty replacement but no mention of oil consumption issues, which sound slightly alarming. Any views on running costs compared to my 320d?
S Line is a given for me as I want the sportier look.

How widespread is the oil consumption issue? How can you tell before you buy if a particular car does it? Is there a fix?

No idea why others have had a problem. Though I see they have.
The 2.0TFSI has an intrinsic defect that can lead to ridiculous oil consumption. The S4 doesn't have this issue.
Are Golfs affected too?

Surprisingly not, AFAIK. It's just 2.0TFSi B8 A4's (2009-2011) and similarly aged A5's and Q5's.

So it looks like something that could be checked by looking at the engine reference before buying or is that detail not visible? Would a 58 plate carry the same defect I wonder.
Have any legal precedents been set in the UK? Is it s fixable issue?
