I have been getting a rythmic knocking noise from the driver's side front wheel of my A4 convertible. Initially I thought it might be a flat spot on the tyre as the car only gets used in the summer and sits in the garage for the rest of the year, but I have swapped the wheel round and the noise is still there.

The noise seems to be linked to wheel rotation as it increases/decreases in frequency depending on speed. Also the noise is greater when turning left as the load is greater on the wheel.

I suspect it may be either a worn CV joint or wheel bearing but am not sure. I haven't jacked the car up to listen to the bearings but will do so soon.

The car is 12yrs old, but has a low mileage of 45000 as its not used very much. Any other ideas would be most welcome.
