C6 S6 avant... really want
Discussion
so its been almost one year since the e39 touring went and in its place an 09 r line tiguan with 2.0 litre petrol engine. its the dullest drive ever and the boot space is crap.
im now lusting after an s6 avant but they are pretty scarce.... what should i pay for one? prices seem to vary massively

ok so heres where im at
i like big petrol lumps and am not bothered about economy. my b3s alpina is currently averaging 11 mpg on my morning run and whilst the new barge will do more miles per days its stop start driving whilst my better half ferries the boys around
the tiguan has been a massive dissappointment. arguably it shouldnt have been bought in the first place but you live and learn.
i miss terribly the e39 for all the reasons that people have written about over the past decade about why they are so accomplished
ive seriously looked at the e55 in the past and its still a contender. scarcity is an issue but there are a couple around. the s6 however is a real contender because it ticks the big lump box but is also something akin to a 4 wheel drive which given where we live is a real plus (one of the main reasons for the tiguan) although the e39 with correct fitment winter tyres and wheels was pretty sure footed
ive only read good things about the c6 s6 and whilst id really prefer a mtm stage 1 c5 rs6 with milltek, its not going to happen.
at least on paper the s6 seems to tick the performance and practical boxes as well as being a relatively practical ride for the wife and kids....
my only question is which of the e55 or the s6 would be the better driving experience...because i guess in terms of mod cons and creature comforts the newer audi would win
ride quality is something im happy to live with... not particulary bothered about whether its crashier but am keen to capture a better driving experience even if it means compromise somewhere

ive been a busy beaver and trying to form a view on the options which currently incude both the w211 e55 and the c6 s6....
theres no doubt that the e55 is the more petrol head choice but the 4wd of the audi plus the newer-ness of it cannot be ignored
neither of them sway me from their appearance alone... i find the audi too bland and the merc looks to un-amg like (unlike the later 63 variant)
there wont be much between them in terms of purchase price (im budgeting 14-15) and i dont care for insurance or fuel economy
neither will cripple me on the maintenance side as a c5 rs6 would so not much to call between them
i really need to drive both but it will be a while before i can get organised to do so plus the w211 seems a bit scarce
in standard guise which
- sounds better?
- has better quality interior (my benchmark here being e39/46 bmws and 90's pork ie hewn from granite)?
- has better creature comforts / mod cons (electric stuff, heated seats, xenons, sound/nav package)?
- better residuals?

So how real is this carbon build up issue and how many people have had to have their engines de coked
The car im seeing has about 70k miles with a full ash but I don't know whether it's mainly stop start miles or motorway
Any things I should be on the lookout for other than what's commonly reported?

I wouldn't be massively concerned by the engine de-coking.
Plenty of very high mileage 5.2l V10s out there. 170k miles seems to be quite common without de-coking.
A major service can be expensive. Would be worth checking when the next one is. £550ish.
Other than that I've had to unplug the sunroof drains a few times manually. 10 second job but they can clog up quite easily. ECU is (I think?) in the passenger footwell which is in your flooding danger zone
Good luck and keep us updated on what you think

i hope so too... couple of niggles...
what might be preventing the tailgate from opening fully remotely? the catch is released but it does seem to pull up
when closing, it all works as should
also, whats the price for pads and discs from tps or audi or do you guys normally go after market??

It's barely raising itself off the catch so I am wondering whether it could be rleated to failing struts? Not sure whether that would explain why the lid doesn't seem to open when the swithc on the drivers side door is pressed.
I expect it more likely an electrical not mechanical issue?

As above most issues with the auto tailgate i have seen have been with setup rather than fault; here's a handy youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gqlo4Xyyfw
With regards to brakes there are a couple of options.
1. Dont get your hands dirty. Audi fixed price servicing is £595 for front discs and pads
2. Source them yourself. Circa £80 per disc for pagids (genuine Audi set i purchased were ATE) and pads are also around £80
One modification i would recommend after a month or so of driving is the VW Phaeton brake duct setup which costs around £100 from TPS. Very easy install with just a minor alteration to the lower mounting bolt hole and they appear to be making quite a difference to brake temperatures.
Parts numbers are
3D0 615 447 G
3D0 615 448 G
3D0 615 311 C
3D0 615 312 C

it unlocks but does not raise itself. it pops clear of the latch then comes down again after raising itself a few inches. ill investigate more thoroughly when i get the car next week

This saloon is the first one that caught my eye recently.
But mileage is putting me off it, and I'd prefer the Avant.

This is the Avant I had a look at at the weekend.
