Auto Gearbox Woes - A6 3.0 TDI

Hi, I'm after some advice. My wife has a 2007 A6 3.0 TDI automatic with 114k on the clock. Yesterday the gearbox started to "judder" when changing up and make a knocking/grinding type noise. She's taken it to and indy and he said it's not worth fixing and to move on and buy another car.

What are my options with regards selling / repairing / part-ex?
