Audi A4 remote locking issue

The driver's door on my wife's 2009 A4 will not unlock using the remote key. Other three doors and boot work fine. She either has to use the key itself in the driver's door or access the car via the passenger door and open from the inside. All doors will lock remotely. Anyone know what the cause/fix might be. I did have a look and could not find any explicit mention of resetting the system other than the options via the MMI. Since I posted the problem is now intermittent. I tested it just now and it works but on locking there is a new momentary whirring sound from the driver's door which is not present on unlocking.
