Evening all, apologies if this has been discussed before but search has been fruitless thus far.

The car is a 2015 manual 5dr, approx one year old and covered around 9.5k miles.

It has developed a 'knock' that presents in a specific manner. It happens when applying the brake pedal the first time the car is moved from start, it doesn't have to be at any great speed - walking pace and an inch of pedal travel is enough. Then doesn't happen again if the car is still moving in a forward gear, for any duration. It only then reoccurs if in reverse and the brake is applied, again speed and brake pedal pressure is irrelevant.
You could start the car, drive forward 10 feet, brake (knock), stop, reverse 10 feet, brake (knock) and repeat to replicate. Or, drive for a hundred miles with no issues after the first braking phase, if only in a forward gear. The waters have been muddied somewhat by this fault only being present after a trip to the dealer for a warranty fault with the coolant gauge (another story). I don't believe the two faults are related but something has changed since they had it and coincidence is strong.

If anyone has experienced similar on a related VAG product I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on possible causes and solutions.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply Simon. It's a lease car which I've had from new and I'm the only driver other than the delivery chap last year and when it went in for work a couple of weeks back. The pads are as they came out of the factory.
Interesting you say what you do as that is the 'fault' reported by the dealer. They say it's not the pads worn themselves but the retaining clips/springs for the pads have deformed slightly due to heavy braking. Warranty won't touch it because of it being a wear and tear item which I can accept from the warranty people's perspective. I'm just annoyed and surprised that the fault appeared after 25 miles with the dealer last time (14 of that was collection and return) yet I'd not encountered it in over 9k miles previously. Yes I have driven it quite hard in the past but the car is a daily driver and spends a lot of time in commuter traffic and on the motorway when I use it for work.
I'm starting to think Italian tune-up / joyriding 'technician' now, which is going to be difficult to prove.

Update time.

Thanks for all the replies btw. The dealer decided to change the pads as a goodwill gesture, got the car back earlier and so far so good. Only travelled around 10 miles so early days clearly, will post up if anything changes.

Sorry to revive an old thread but did your new pads sort this problem? I’ve had the exact same thing but I’ve got new pads all round and it’s still doing it.
Hi Mick,

The noise did return but to a much lesser degree. I only noticed it a couple of times when the radio was off and it was quiet, so I just put up with it as it was only a few months away from being returned to the lease company.
