Morning folks,

I bought the above vehicle 19 months ago with 29k miles on the clock, it has now done 70k miles. At the weekend I got the flashing yellow coil light and the engine went into limp mode. I took it into my local garage on Tuesday morning who told me that it was an EGR fault code that was showing up. He wiped the code however and the car ran like new for a few days. I did a bit of research online and it seems like EGR faults with the mk6 golf are very common, however due to the inaccessibility on these models replacement costs can be more than £1000. The light came on last night whilst on a long drive home but it's back to normal this morning. I have taken some advice from various sources and come up with the following plan:

1. Spend £6 on some Wynn's extreme diesel system cleaner from halfords.

If this doesn't work . . .

2. Book the car in for a Terraclean at my nearest agent

If this doesn't work . . .

3. Speak to my local tuning garage to see if they can suggest any re-map or EGR delete programmes that might work

If this doesn't work . . .

4. Speak to my local VW dealer to try and negotiate a reduced price to replace (a lot of people online have had 100% part and 50% labour costs covered, leading to a bill of only £250 or so).

If none of this works I'll take the hit and pay full price for the repair. It'll be a sore one, but when putting 30k miles per year on a car you need to expect some big bills I suppose - and I'm still much better off than running a company car, even with this potential bill.

If anyone has any advice or tips they would be much appreciated, and I'll keep you updated with my progress - in case anyone else has the same issue.

Cheers,
Davie

I ended up selling the car to WBAC. I was offered a very good deal on a friend's XF 3.0d so I chopped in the Golf.

After a few long runs and a few fill ups of premium diesel the issue seemed to disappear though to be honest. Might be worth a go.

All the best
