Audi A3 - very dim headlights

The headlights on my 2001 A3 have become very dim recently, to the point I'd rather not drive it at night.

Any suggestions on fixes, is it likely to be the bulbs? I found a thread on a yank forum about adjusting the beam as a potential solution.

I'll take a look tonight, I've given them a clean but googled your suggestion and came across this.
