Hi,

Have ordered an S5 Sportback with MMI navigation plus (3 yr Subscription). I understand that the car has a built in SIM for WiFi, so my question is can my kids connect to this with their iPad and connect to the Internet on long journeys?

Yup; can be done via Bluetooth if you have a phone that supports RSAP and want to share its data plan.

I just use a cheap Giff Gaff sim.
Ok thanks for answering this, but it leads then to another question. I have an iPhone 6s which I know is ok for use with Audi MMI, not sure about the RSAP you mention though. How would I set this up with a kids iPad or Kindle?

Thanks for your assistance.

RSAP is the bluetooth profile / protocol for using your phone's SIM over the car's own antenna (not the phone's in-built one), for lack of a better way to describe it.

iPhone 6s has it enabled phone-side.

But that's not the same as allowing access to the internet. If it's the same set up as the TT, only one phone can provide the internet access via bluetooth.

But if you get a separate SIM, you don't need to worry about this - once set up, you don't need to connect your phone via bluetooth for internet access (but still needed if you want to use your phone for calls).

Share access to the SIM / data fitted to the car via WiFi hotspot.
Thanks,....sounds tricky as I am not a phone expert (I am more of the hello, goodbye type with the odd text). Will give it a try when it arrives though, or ask the kids how to do it!!!

Yep - that's the one I've got.
Thanks for the posts. So as I understand it, I need to get a new data SIM for the phone so kids can share WiFi at a lower cost, but the downside being I cannot use my existing telephone number for calls, texts etc? and also what does the inbuilt car SIM do then? I take it this cannot be used for this, or if so, it is very expensive to connect via Audi. Sorry if I sound stupid on this subject, but I probably am where this concerned!

I looked at this into detail and i'm sure the AUDI SIM, although unlimited, cannot be used for WIFI hotspot. When i saw it online i thought great unlimited WIFI for free, get torrenting while in the car.

But after reading into it and from what others have said above, you need your OWN SIM card, which you would create as a hotspot. This should also disable the cars SIM and therefore, you would also be using your SIM card for the maps the car uses etc.
So can eat up massive data very quickly.
I'd try EE for a SIM, i currently pay £16.10 a month for 64GB, but that was a rentions offer.

Anything accessed via the MMI uses the cars inbuilt WIFI, so i think the maps, the petrol info and Twitter/Facebook browser maybe?
I can see why its not unlimited using the cars SIM as you could pass through 100GB's a month and AUDI have to pay whoever the network provider is for this.

Check the forum post below, i have copy and pasted the good bits
http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/...

Embedded Sim is for SOS/Emergency Services and all Audi Infotainment services (Google Maps/Napster/Aupeo!/Audi Connect). You can NOT use the embedded sim as a data connection for the Wifi HotSpot in the car.

If you plug a sim into the car then that will be used for Audi Infotainment Services + Wifi HotSpot internet access for the car. (SOS/Emergency Services continues to use the Embedded Sim)

This is the schpell on page 103 of the Q7 Brochure (August 2017)

Audi Connect Online Infotainment Services are provided via a SIM card embedded in the vehicle. The cost for data connection is free of charge during the standard 3-month free trial or included within the cost of the optional Audi Connect 36-month subscription. Data is unlimited (but you will not, for example, be able to use the embedded SIM to provide Wi-Fi hotspot services or to tether any other device to the embedded SIM).
Thanks for the useful response. This has made me think how simple things were when cars came with the latest tech (not so long ago either)....a cassette player! I also wonder what the natural progression will be in the same time span?...a HAL type of in built intelligent computer to obey every voice command without buttons and answer any questions (making forums like this redundant), warn you of any potential dangers and take control?.....very possible I think.
